Women have often been looked down upon in past realities and epics, with claims that they are incapable of performing such tasks. Gender inequality has been noted in some myths, where women are only portrayed as men's helpers. They're often referred to as "pleasure instruments" in some plays. Gender and...

How to Write a Thesis Statement | 4 Steps & Examples

Published on January 11, 2019 by Shona McCombes . Revised on August 15, 2023 by Eoghan Ryan.

A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay . It usually comes near the end of your introduction .

Your thesis will look a bit different depending on the type of essay you’re writing. But the thesis statement should always clearly state the main idea you want to get across. Everything else in your essay should relate back to this idea.

You can write your thesis statement by following four simple steps:

  • Start with a question
  • Write your initial answer
  • Develop your answer
  • Refine your thesis statement

What is a thesis statement, placement of the thesis statement, step 1: start with a question, step 2: write your initial answer, step 3: develop your answer, step 4: refine your thesis statement, types of thesis statements, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about thesis statements.

A thesis statement summarizes the central points of your essay. It is a signpost telling the reader what the essay will argue and why.

The best thesis statements are:

  • Concise: A good thesis statement is short and sweet—don’t use more words than necessary. State your point clearly and directly in one or two sentences.
  • Contentious: Your thesis shouldn’t be a simple statement of fact that everyone already knows. A good thesis statement is a claim that requires further evidence or analysis to back it up.
  • Coherent: Everything mentioned in your thesis statement must be supported and explained in the rest of your paper.

The thesis statement generally appears at the end of your essay introduction or research paper introduction .

The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education. The use of the internet in academic contexts and among young people more generally is hotly debated. For many who did not grow up with this technology, its effects seem alarming and potentially harmful. This concern, while understandable, is misguided. The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its many benefits for education: the internet facilitates easier access to information, exposure to different perspectives, and a flexible learning environment for both students and teachers.

You should come up with an initial thesis, sometimes called a working thesis , early in the writing process . As soon as you’ve decided on your essay topic , you need to work out what you want to say about it—a clear thesis will give your essay direction and structure.

You might already have a question in your assignment, but if not, try to come up with your own. What would you like to find out or decide about your topic?

For example, you might ask:

After some initial research, you can formulate a tentative answer to this question. At this stage it can be simple, and it should guide the research process and writing process .

Now you need to consider why this is your answer and how you will convince your reader to agree with you. As you read more about your topic and begin writing, your answer should get more detailed.

In your essay about the internet and education, the thesis states your position and sketches out the key arguments you’ll use to support it.

The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its many benefits for education because it facilitates easier access to information.

In your essay about braille, the thesis statement summarizes the key historical development that you’ll explain.

The invention of braille in the 19th century transformed the lives of blind people, allowing them to participate more actively in public life.

A strong thesis statement should tell the reader:

  • Why you hold this position
  • What they’ll learn from your essay
  • The key points of your argument or narrative

The final thesis statement doesn’t just state your position, but summarizes your overall argument or the entire topic you’re going to explain. To strengthen a weak thesis statement, it can help to consider the broader context of your topic.

These examples are more specific and show that you’ll explore your topic in depth.

Your thesis statement should match the goals of your essay, which vary depending on the type of essay you’re writing:

  • In an argumentative essay , your thesis statement should take a strong position. Your aim in the essay is to convince your reader of this thesis based on evidence and logical reasoning.
  • In an expository essay , you’ll aim to explain the facts of a topic or process. Your thesis statement doesn’t have to include a strong opinion in this case, but it should clearly state the central point you want to make, and mention the key elements you’ll explain.

A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay . Everything else you write should relate to this key idea.

The thesis statement is essential in any academic essay or research paper for two main reasons:

  • It gives your writing direction and focus.
  • It gives the reader a concise summary of your main point.

Without a clear thesis statement, an essay can end up rambling and unfocused, leaving your reader unsure of exactly what you want to say.

Follow these four steps to come up with a thesis statement :

  • Ask a question about your topic .
  • Write your initial answer.
  • Develop your answer by including reasons.
  • Refine your answer, adding more detail and nuance.

The thesis statement should be placed at the end of your essay introduction .

Studying Skywalkers: Themes in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

Studying skywalkers: themes in star wars: the empire strikes back.

Dan Zehr

In the film that changed Star Wars forever, themes deepened and darkened.

Studying Skywalkers is an exclusive column that investigates the characters, themes, and lessons of Star Wars from an educational, literary perspective. In this installment, StarWars.com looks at themes in  Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

Star Wars.com continues to look at themes present in the six existing Star Wars films as we get closer to Star Wars:  The Force Awakens . Up next on our list is The Empire Strikes Back. Routinely analyzed and dissected for incredible action, evolving character dynamics, and, of course, the stunning reveal of Skywalker pedigree. The penultimate film in the original trilogy contains themes that heighten personal cost to each character, and adds more layers of complexity and drama to the Star Wars saga. As with many good stories, the film provides more questions than answers, and has left a legacy on popular culture for many generations of not only Star Wars fans, but filmgoers as well.

The Empire Strikes Back - Han riding a Tauntaun on Hoth

Sacrifice can come at great personal cost As soon as the opening crawl blends into space, Luke Skywalker finds himself in a precarious situation, and Han Solo must venture out into the icy world of the Hoth system in order to save his friend. Han submerges himself into the frigid climate, and saves his friend from almost certain death. Han puts his friend’s life above his own, and, despite sub-zero temperatures, and several warnings, Solo forsakes his individual nature yet again for Luke, and demonstrates that the eponymous hero is solo in name only. The irony here is that when he is later encased in carbonite, the cold yet again leads to Solo forming a stronger bond with his friends, as they will soon risk everything for him.

Much later in the film, Luke must risk his life, and future as a Jedi Knight, in order to face Darth Vader, in the hopes of rescuing his friends. He rejects the advice of Yoda that he must honor what they fight for, and chooses to leave Dagobah and head towards a potentially fatal confrontation with the Lord of the Sith. Luke has waited his entire life to become a Jedi Knight, and he puts his own pursuits behind in order to save his friends. Both characters choose selflessness, and bring more nuance to their respective characters as a result of personal sacrifice.

The Empire Strikes Back - Yoda on Dagobah

What lies beneath the surface One of the more meaningful themes in The Empire Strikes Back involves what is beyond the surface, or more pertinent to the theme: understanding that superficial judgments about what one sees is not always a clear picture. The clearest example is that of the diminutive Jedi Master, Yoda. When we first meet the 900-year-old Dagobah resident, he is playful and frivolous, but once Luke Skywalker exhibits impatience, Yoda presents a sage, mature mentor that is possibly the most respected and skillful warrior in the history of the Jedi Order. Yoda famously tells Luke how fruitless it is to judge him by his size, and demonstrates a hint of his power by lifting the X-wing out of the swamp. As the X-wing comes out of the surface, the audience, along with Luke, learns there is more to understand than what is on the surface; truth often comes from what cannot be seen.

The Empire Strikes Back - Darth Vader on Cloud City

Sometimes the bad guy wins During the climax of The Empire Strikes Back , audiences learn who Darth Vader’s offspring is, and one of the most iconic moments in film history is born. Not only has Luke lost his hand in this monumental battle, but he loses his remaining innocence, as well. Luke’s world is literally and figuratively turned upside down, as he is stranded on a weather vane beneath Cloud City, hanging by his legs. Vader has subverted every belief that Luke held dear and, at the end of the film, in addition to the loss mentioned above, Luke also loses his best friend (Han), along with the idealized version of his father that he carried with him his entire life. Even in a fictional universe, sometimes life isn’t fair and the bad guy does win. However, that does not mean that hope is lost, as the last film in the original trilogy will tell us.

What other themes in The Empire Strikes Back have you noticed in your many viewings? Let us know in the comments below, and be on the lookout for the next installment, themes in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi .

Essays on Star Wars

Star wars between misogyny and radical feminism.

Star Wars is more than just cinema. Beyond technological feats, lightsaber fights and the often promoted marketing venture, the saga created in the late 1970s by George Lucas conveys values and messages that reflect social, political, and even religious concerns. One of the concerns that Star Wars raised in the original saga is gender inequality. Since Star Wars was created to portray the masculine hero’s journey, illustrated in Josef Campbell’s Hero Of a Thousand Faces, women suffered from gender inequality […]

Star Wars: a New Peace

Throughout the 1900’s, communism took the world by storm as it spread through Europe and Asia. Karl Marx wrote about the widespread ideology in his greatest work of writing, The Communist Manifesto(1848), and declared that all property in society should be equally owned, and payment would be dealt according to his or her abilities and needs. And so, after the majority of WWI had elapsed, the communistic cancer began spreading throughout the nations of Europe, beginning with the Bolshevik Revolution […]

Star Wars: the Force Awakens Review

Star Wars: The Force Awakens American film director, J.J. Abrams set out to return to the roots of the first Star Wars film and be based more on emotion than explanation with a smooth transition. In order to do this, Abram tied together and reconnected the film to the past movies. Star Wars: […]

How Disney Uses Star Wars

Capitalism and the effects of it in current day society, has allowed Disney to gain access to many people worldwide in order to market and be apart of the public’s everyday lives. The History of Star Wars the Force Awakens

The Odyssey sets the standard for many modern-day epic stories. There are many examples of this, however, focusing on Star Wars, this becomes quite evident Every epic has a plot around A Hero’s Journey. There is a theme for the film that has an acronym, G.O.E.S. Which stands for   Glorified, On a Quest, Ethical, and Strong. Issue of Pover in Star Wars

After a war and now a little over a decade later, the Galactic Empire controls the galaxy and seeks to end the rebellion. In an early scene, you see […]

Conflict of Light Vs Dark in Star Wars

Star Wars represents a simplistic view of the conflict of light versus dark. The black and white morality with good guys, such as Luke and Leia wearing bright fair colors, while the villains, such as Vader wearing all black, are the first visual color motifs and cues that the Star Wars films rely on (Campbell). Color motifs predate the Star Wars films, however; the white hats versus black hats is one of the basic forms of fictional morality that visual […]

An Analysis of the Main Themes in Star Wars, Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings

When it comes to fantasy movies, several various themes always seem to stand out. Several examples of these themes are various forms of magic, an evil villain, and some sort of political discourse-whether it be between two different governing bodies, or be against itself in some way. These three themes occur in numerous ways in George Lucas’ Star Wars, J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, and J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. While there are many similarities between […]

Gender Issues and Pop Culture

Pop culture has a considerable influence on society. One of the major trends in pop culture, which has influenced most of our youth is the popularity of Disney movies. One of the most known movie lines of all time is “Luke, I am your father”, found in the movie Star Wars, The Empire Strike Back. In fact, Wizard magazine awarded the Empire Strike as the best cliffhanger of all time. Unfortunately, currently not anyone can share the same thrill as of the people who heard the line when the movie just came out in 1980. The reason for depreciation of the thrill is that everyone is aware of the amazing quote even before watching the movie. In addition, everybody knows that Darth Vader (The warlord of the Dark side) is also Luke Sky walkers (the hero) biological father. Do the two realizations hinder us from the shock that the audience had 30 years ago? What if we could make our own twist? Wouldn’t that be entertaining? Star wars: The Empire Strike Back was the second movie of the whole Star Wars saga. Empire Strike Back was succeeded by both a sequel and three other prequels. However, the Empire Strike Back is regarded as the element that shaped the Star Wars series. Personally, I owe it all to that one line in the Empire Strike Back. It might sound cheesy nowadays, but when you really think about it, details coming after that one line are like the minor missing pieces of assembling a puzzle. Without the remaining details after the line, one can already imagine how the big-picture would look like. Therefore, changing that one line could completely change the whole saga. Lets go back to the part where the line takes place, in order to get an idea of how the line affects the whole drama. It is in a Cloud City where Vader and Luke engage in a brutal light-saber duel. Vader cuts of Luke’s hand, disarming him, and reveals he did not kill Luke’s father, but actually he is his father; or in a different scenario Darth Vader is both Luke’s father and mother. Instead of being all “butt-hurt” about the new revelation, Luke begins to feel his ‘father’s’ pain. Luke begins to see through the hate that people feel against his father. The Dark Side term is only used by the Jedi members in reference to those who go against the Jedi’s conservative ways. Luke could not bear the sight of a grown cyborg weeping. For sure, sympathy was taking a toll of Luke. Moreover, the fact of being introduced to his biological parent, both a father and a mother, wrapped up within a futuristic fully functional hijab was quite disturbing and odd moment, but beautiful nonetheless. Moreover, for the first time, unlike the Jedi’s, instead of going against Vader and labeling him as a bi-curious tyrant, he actually took the time to sit and listen. Luke wanted to know why the Jedi’s were so strongly against the ‘Dark Side’, and the reason for that dreadful name. Luke also wanted to find out who was Yoda, the interesting little green monk that trained him and gave him the skills to vanquish his life giver, and what could he ever have had against his father/mother. Anakin Skywalker (Darth Vader) was first seen by the religious group (the Jedi league) when he was nine years of age. He was a slave at a planet called Tatooine, and being raised by his mother Shmi Skywalker. Apparently, there were claims that Anakin had no father, implying he was born through a miraculous birth. At first, the Jedi league showed no interest in the boy, judging by the fact that his mother was known to have an active social life. However, Obi-Wan had a different idea, after realizing that Anakin was a talented engineer and pilot, who could see the future at such an early age. These realizations made Obi-Wan believe that the young boy was the next Christ, and also the fact that the boy showed totally no sign of testosterone, assured him that the boy had no father and was born miraculously. Although the boy was a bit feminine, Obi-Wan volunteered that he would teach him everything he knew, until the day the young boy was old enough to lead the galaxy as the new messiah. Obi-Wan sticking to his promise tried every drop of his force to stop Anakin’s Bi-curious self. Sadly for him, as days went by Anakin went on endless series of un-ethically disturbing activities, such as; playing tea parties with his android companions, collecting Barbie dolls, knitting pink power-ranger suite and wearing it for Halloween. Obi-Wan despite fighting hard to keep his promise got to a point where he also lost all hope in the next “messiah”. Living as an outcast, Anakin really needed a friend, a real none robotic male friend, that he never had. Padme Amidala (Luke and princess Lea’s biological mother) was nice to Anakin, but he always thought that she was getting all the attention from the other Jedi’s, so she was more like a “Whore” to Anakin, but a “whore” that she idolized. Anakin really needed someone to talk to, while at the same time scrutinizing Padme’s every move. Therefore, Anakin decided to get himself a pet. He developed a bit of interest in “toy-dogs” while hanging out with his ballet crew. Toy-dogs aren’t really toys, but tiny dogs that the rich girls from her ballet used to dress, carry in bags and then later dump in glitter; practically treating them like royalty for no apparent reason. It felt like love at first sight when he saw the little green pug. With its’ bright shiny eyes, Anakin knew it would become his best friend; he would train it and call it Yoda. As days passed, Anakin’s love for his one and only companion grew and grew every day. The fact that Yoda could not say “I love you” back was unbearable to Anakin. Therefore, Anakin attempted to give Yoda some vocal cords through surgery so he would hear his best friend say those magic words. While he was doing the surgery, he thought of all the things that he would gain if Yoda gained speech. Yoda could become part of Anakin’s “Let’s pretend to be Padme” game and actually act and not just watch, and he could help him decide what to wear by stating his opinion. Anakin couldn’t wait to hear Yoda’s first words. He stood there looking at his trusty companion coming back from the anesthesia only to hear “grow balls, you must!” Young Anakin could not bear what he just heard; he sent his one and only friend to the wild swamps and freed him. After freeing Yoda, Vader ponders that perhaps freeing the pet was the same problem he was in. Vader realizes that he had been wrong all the time for deciding what and how Yoda should play with him. Vader also pitied himself after considering that Yoda had insulted him because he was to mean as he hindered him from playing in the wild like he would have wanted. Vader also consider the lifestyle he had imposed on Yoda, and he should free him in a swampy planted. Little does Vader realizes that he was doing more harm by freeing Yoda; as needed not to be set free. Due to this Yoda thinks that Vader had left him there to die; as Yoda is not aware that Vader does not realize he is not a wild animal to be freed. Why everybody was against Vader’s regime became clear to Luke after he finally listened to the other side of the argument. The Jedi league or whatever it may be called was always against Anakin Skywalker’s (Darth Vader’s) bi-curious personality. At first, Obi-Wan thought of it as a phase, but each new day Anakin only became more and more odd in Obi-Wan’s eyes. Obi-Wan chose not to speak about it, as it had become something obvious. Young Anakin was showing that he had some interest in Padme, and which Anakin actually tried to like (interest in Padme); so that the Jedi thought maybe he was really into girls. Anakin always Idolized Padme in a way that gave obi-wan along with his fellow Jedi’s, a sense of relief and made them think, maybe he is into females. However, the Jedi thought lasted until Obi-Wan heard about Anakin most recent project that didn’t end very well. The Jedi also never knew that Anakin wanted to be princess Padme: Cross-dressing using Padme clothes and going shopping for shoes. He loved the girl, but wasn’t really in love with her. Although, he did keep trying to love the natural way, he later realized that he wanted to be in the bottom. Therefore, he arranged his droids (R2-D2 and C-3PO) to do a sex change. Unfortunately, their ship went through meteor showers and in the process he lost two of his limbs alongside his “force”. Young Anakin screamed for help and Obi-wan rushed to save the next “messiah’, only to see that the Young Anakin was a mess, unbearable to look at. Obi-wan could not believe that young Anakin would go that far. Obi-Wan was angry with Anakin, as he wondered how the next “messiah” could be so gay. He asked Anakin if his actions were in deed of a true messiah. Anakin believed that the one who chose him as the next “messiah” would not let him become someone he was not. Therefore, he concluded that he was not doing anything wrong. The Jedi feared that people would follow this kind of “messiah”, and hence they started trying to ruin his image, in order to hinder him from any followers. Palpatine (the unnamed emperor of the Galactic Empire) offered to help Vader to escape by giving him a futuristic hijab (a dress used by the Muslims to cover up anything that might arouse the male). Young Anakin liked the idea as it made him feel precious, and they run off to their land of freedom. Anakin fell in love with the hijab and decided to wear it forever to hide his deformation. He also decided to change his name to Darth Vader because it was so “exotic”. Princess Padme was appalled by her lover-boy’s choice to leave her and his bi-curious hijab wearing ideology, and thus she committed suicide after having his babies. The reason why the Jedis used Luke for their dirty-job was because Vader groused them out. They had been exposed to him a lot, which had turned them a bit homophobic. In addition, Anakin was almost unbeatable due to his mixture of ballet and sword fighting. The only one who could keep up with Anakin was Yoda, as Anakin had forced Yoda to train with him. However, they could not actually have an actual conversation with the guy because they did not understand anything he said. Therefore, they dumped everything on the orphan that they were stuck with (Luke). Due to his recent discovery about why people were all against “the Dark Side”, Luke decides that he should fight alongside his transgender parent against the universes conservative party to ensue freedom of choice, speech, religion and sexuality. Anakin and Luke fought for their own definition of good; as sexually confused father and son. The reason for writing this story is to illustrate how change is indispensable especially in the modern society influenced by change and integration of culture and religion. People have different tastes, choices, ideas, principals; and it is only right if we respect the diversity of ideas as long as they cause no harm to the humanity that brought people to this world. Strike back is perhaps a good revelation of how going against the diversity of tastes, choices, ideas, principals can in reverse haunt us in the future.

Clients are not forced to pay for work immediately; money is transferred to a bank card only after receiving a document.

The services guarantee the uniqueness of scientific work, because the employees have special education and are well versed in the topics of work. They do not need to turn to third-party sites for help. All files are checked for plagiarism so that your professors cannot make claims. Student life is associated with great stress and nervous breakdowns, so young guys and girls urgently need outside help. There are sites that take all the responsibility for themselves. In this case, the user is the boss who hires the employee to delegate responsibilities and devote themselves to more important tasks. You can correct the work of the writer at all stages, observe that all special wishes are implemented and give advice. You pay for the work only if you liked the essay and passed the plagiarism check.

Our Professional Writers Are Our Pride

EssayService boasts its wide writer catalog. Our writers have various fields of study, starting with physics and ending with history. Therefore we are able to tackle a wide range of assignments coming our way, starting with the short ones such as reviews and ending with challenging tasks such as thesis papers. If you want real professionals some of which are current university professors to write your essays at an adequate price, you've come to the right place! Hiring essay writers online as a newcomer might not be the easiest thing to do. Being cautious here is important, as you don't want to end up paying money to someone who is hiring people with poor knowledge from third-world countries. You get low-quality work, company owners become financial moguls, and those working for such an essay writing service are practically enduring intellectual slavery. Our writing service, on the other hand, gives you a chance to work with a professional paper writer. We employ only native English speakers. But having good English isn't the only skill needed to ace papers, right? Therefore we require each and every paper writer to have a bachelor's, master's, or Ph.D., along with 3+ years of experience in academic writing. If the paper writer ticks these boxes, they get mock tasks, and only with their perfect completion do they proceed to the interview process.
