The Company Once Known as Restoration Hardware Is Opening Restaurants. Why?

The furnishings store has moved into the hospitality business — but the food may not be the point.

On a recent night at the Dining Room at RH Guesthouse New York — a restaurant from the home-design company formerly known as Restoration Hardware — the server began her tableside spiel with a paean to the surroundings: “Welcome to our very beige space.”

The room, she explained, was built from white oak and Italian travertine. Each table, chair and light fixture was custom made. The hearth was carved from a single slab of stone. Creating the space — which looks like a high-end art museum without any of the art — took nearly seven years, she said.

The food got a brief mention. There’s a grilled avocado topped with caviar ($52); a burger with cheese and caramelized onions ($38); and a grilled maitake mushroom served over fried potatoes ($36). Most of it was enjoyable. Not much was memorable.

Guests snapped photos — not of their meals, but of the Italian wool velvet chairs and the coffered ceiling.

“It feels very European in here,” one diner, Brandon Elias, 29, said of the restaurant, which opened in September in the meatpacking district of Manhattan. “The design is really elegant.”

RH has opened 15 of these restaurants across the United States and Canada in the last decade, most of them connected to stores, and they have clearly resonated with diners, many of them drawn by the décor. Each restaurant earns an average of $10 million annually, said Gary Friedman, the company’s chief executive. (That’s more than 10 times the annual sales of a typical restaurant in the United States, according to a 2022 report from the National Restaurant Association.)

Restaurants inside stores aren’t a novel idea, and companies like Ikea and Neiman Marcus are well known for theirs. But none have outfitted theirs as lavishly as RH has, transforming rooftops and courtyards in cities like West Palm Beach, Fla., and Columbus, Ohio, into neutral-hued havens for affluent diners.

RH restaurants aren’t just a way to draw in shoppers. They’re central to Mr. Friedman’s goal of promoting RH as a luxury company. (RH also has a private jet for rent, a yacht available to charter and the aforementioned guesthouse in New York, where rooms start at $3,500 per night.)

Restoration Hardware, which Stephen Gordon founded in 1979 in Eureka, Calif., once had a reputation for selling vintage screwdrivers, antique wooden chests and other retro home goods that Mr. Gordon found in his travels.

A man in a white shirt and suede vest stands next to a hearth with rotisserie chickens roasting over a spit to his left.

Mr. Friedman, a former president of Williams-Sonoma, took over the company in 2001, eventually renaming it, adding interior design services and opening high-end showrooms — and restaurants.

He said he turned to “arguably the best chef in the world” for advice on the restaurants’ menus, though he declined to name the chef. When asked who runs RH’s culinary program, a company publicist said “there is not a named chef for the restaurants.”

In some ways, Mr. Friedman has embraced the role himself. While overseeing menu development for the Palm Court Restaurant at RH San Francisco , he said, he banned black pepper from the kitchen after tasting a version of the rotisserie chicken that seemed too spicy. And when the caviar in the avocado appetizer tasted rancid, someone from the caviar company flew in to assess the problem. A cook had spritzed lemon on it. Mr. Friedman banned lemon. (He has since allowed pepper and lemon back in.)

He said the food is “way, way, way more important” to him than the looks of the restaurants. “Nobody cares if the room’s beautiful if the food sucks.”

Still, several RH diners, all of them customers of the store, said they came not for the food, but for the aesthetics.

“It is not, like, Wolfgang Puck,” said Christy Clarey, 55, of Newport Beach, Calif., who was visiting the RH Rooftop Restaurant at RH New York , located around the corner from the Dining Room at RH Guesthouse. “That is his brand. He is the chef. This just has to be good-basic.”

Anuja Beauchamp, 45, a customer at RH Rooftop Restaurant at RH Dallas , returned to the restaurant “to see if they are going to trade out the chandeliers” in the dining room. She said she didn’t have high expectations of the food, but it was better than she anticipated.

Faith Wilde, 25, another guest in Dallas, said that these days, she is more interested in a restaurant’s appearance. “If it doesn’t look like this, we probably won’t even go,” she said.

RH opened its first restaurant in 2015, in the courtyard of a historic building in the wealthy Gold Coast neighborhood of Chicago. Most locations share roughly the same furnishings (chandeliers, olive trees, a fountain) and menu (burgers, chicken, Caesar salads). And more restaurants are on the way, with plans to open in Paris, London, Palo Alto, Calif., and Aspen, Colo.

Mr. Friedman said intense preparation goes into all of these places. At one point, he and his team built a model kitchen out of plastic foam and practiced running through service, as if rehearsing for a play.

On one recent evening, though, the RH Rooftop Restaurant at RH New York may have needed more practice.

A little more than an hour into dinner, a server approached this reporter’s table and told our group — still eating dessert — that we had to leave so others could be seated. Diners must walk through the RH showroom to exit the restaurant, but as we stopped to admire the leather on a handsome sectional, a saleswoman said that while the restaurant was open, the showroom was not, and briskly escorted us out.

The leather was genuine. The hospitality, less so.

It’s finally here: RH San Francisco, the massive five-story gallery and restaurant taking over 80,000-square-feet of space at Pier 70 opens Thursday, May 12. Not only does the project include a retail store where RH (the company ditched its full “Restoration Hardware” name in 2012) fans can ogle at the company’s luxury home furnishings, but it also encompasses the Palm Court Restaurant and two wine bars, each pouring approximately 40 wines by the glass including “limited production offerings from Napa Valley’s renowned small vintners,” according to a press release.

The Palm Court Restaurant sits on the first floor of the historic Bethlehem Steel Building, which the company spent years restoring. Designed by San Francisco architect Frederick H. Meyer (also responsible for the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium) the building was constructed in 1917 and has now been reimagined by RH Chairman and CEO Gary Friedman. To get to the restaurant, diners will pass through hand-forged iron doors and into the buildings octagonal lobby, stepping over the original rose marble floors and past cast-stone walls. Much of the main floor is dedicated to gallery space; the former Bethlehem Steel executive offices have been transformed into a series of rooms showcasing RH Contemporary, a new collection set to launch later this year.

The Palm Court Restaurant occupies the center of the floors’ two wings, under an arching atrium that drenches the space in natural light. The restaurant, adorned in Calacatta gold marble, serves a live-fire menu inspired by Friedman’s global travels — think, wood-grilled avocados and artichokes, whole grilled branzino, and coal roasted sweet potatoes (full menus below). Diners will be able to grab lunch or dinner while seated beneath structural steelwork inspired by the historic shipyard and next to a center fountain surrounded by Medjool date palms. Chandeliers surround the centerpiece: a cooking hearth flanked by two Molteni rotisseries from France. A pair of wine bars, found off each of the restaurant’s two entrances, will pour dozens of still and sparkling wines.

For those not at the gallery to eat and drink, the other four floors — and rooftop garden — will house galleries for each of RH’s collections: on level 2, RH Interiors; on level 3 RH Modern; and on level 4, RH Outdoors, along with the rooftop park complete with retractable glass walls. A lower level will house an RH design firm and atelier, including private client presentation rooms. The gallery and restaurant will be open from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. daily. Reservations can be made on OpenTable .

Restoration Hardware

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

We spent a pleasant 2hours here, wandering through the furniture store that is so much more than a furniture store! The rooms are full of interesting furniture and accessories, and the real bonus is that you can buy pastries and yummy coffees and plop down... on that furniture, as if you are in your own home. Some people brought laptops and worked, while others were busy meeting with designers. There is no pressure to purchase anything. It’s a pleasant way to spend some time. Next time, we’ll actually make a reservation and try out the restaurant! More

Don't miss this drop dead gorgeous store with a fabulous restaurant in an atrium on the first floor. At the breath taking main entrance you will be greeted like an old friend by a professional information person. TIP: Go up the elevator to the top... floor and view the collection of amazing outdoor furnishings. Walk down the stairs to floor after floor of stunning rooms arranged by the world's best interior designers. There are sales leads on each floor to answer questions or even help you design your home, apartment or condo. Between contemporary, traditional and children's furnishings you will be sure to find something you like. Be warned you will want to chuck your furniture and replace it with the beautiful collections on display here. Furniture plus accessories, lighting, wall mirrors and art rugs and drapery beautiful in it's simplicity are on display at RH Chicago. The first floor atrium restaurant is a perfect place to get a drink or have lunch from a wonderful menu of tantalizing items. If you are even remotely interested in design, furniture or just a place to get some ideas for your own living space...RH Chicago is not to be missed. More

We went for dinner at 7pm by reservation,we were not seated until 7:35pm. The hostess was not so helpful because she gave us the couch seating for three where others sat 9 together on the couche. Plus I specifically requested a table and not a... couch. it is uncomfortable to eat and you are bending down to the coffee table!!! Our server Mageal was so courteous and officiant. He brought everything on time and in great manners. He chatted with us on our order and brought us a goodie for dessert. I go a lot to this restaurant and from all the servers there, Mageal is the best. Thank you! Food was good and tasty and we were very satisfy. More

Who would've thought one could find in a Restoration Hardware and have a lovely meal in a beautiful atrium? The wine list is great, and the menu, while not extensive, has some good items on it. Vegetarian options are available... vegans would have a tough... time eating here. We started with the burrata and the artichokes- both delicious. My salmon was cooked nicely, yet could've used a bit more seasoning. The truffle fries were a great size and again, cooked nicely... and not as flavored as I would have expected. More

It'd be 5 star w/o doubt even they let me bring Fido! Great place for a late lunch or early dinner. I'm always surprised at how good the food is and so is everybody I bring here. Plus I get great decorating ideas.

The restaurant was pretty. However, the strong smell of chlorine (likely from the fountain) permeating throughout the dining room caused me to not enjoy the experience. I ordered the salmon and it was average, nothing special. Our party of 4 was seated at a coffee... table, and I didn’t appreciate having to hunch over while eating. Our bill was nearly $400 for a party of 4. I won’t return. More

This restaurant and entire experience was sensational. From the moment we sat down, we were served our wine and suggested that should we choose, we could wander throughout this incredible old building and view all the furnishings! The food and service were also exceptional and... only second to the ambience, truly majestic! More

The settings are absolutely stunning. And the service is akin to a five star hotel. The food is not the sho piece here, it’s the surroundings. Even if you just go for tea it’s well worth the visit. Do not miss it.

This was my 2nd visit to this amazing store. Immaculately clean without a spec of dust. Each showroom is inspiring to walk through. The atrium restaurant is mesmerizing. A must see for your trip to Chicago.

While visiting Chicago my niece and and I enjoyed a lovely lunch in the restaurant. The food was delish, the service was excellent and the ambience by the fountain was perfect. Definitely a must when visiting Chicago. After lunch we walked around the store and... got a look of ideas. More

An incredible building five floors of aesthetics. Beautiful architecture beautiful design, from top to bottom. Nice bar and nice restaurant with a terrace. Beautifully done.

We didn't know what to expect from this restaurant (we love the stores but had never been to a restaurant in one!), but were blown away in every way! We did have to wait a long time to get a table, as they don't take... reservations, but they have a great bar where we thoroughly enjoyed bellinis while we waited :) The ambiance in this restaurant is literally straight out of a magazine. As someone who loves splurging on beautiful restaurants there aren't many that take my breath away - this one did in a way I didn't expect. It really feels like sitting in a fairytale! I will also say that I expected the food to be good, but nothing very special. I couldn't have been more wrong. I was with my mom and sisters and we split a ton of things - the cheeseburger was literally the best I've ever had, the burrata and tomato salad was the same (even better than I had in Italy....or maybe tied lol), the lobster roll was outstanding, the hot dog was heaven, the beef dip was next level too! The wine list was extensive and the service was exceptional. I will most definitely be back to enjoy this special place again! And I will look forward to going to other RH Restaurants when I'm in other cities to see how they compare! More

Cool spot and delicious food. The French Dip was tasty and so was the Chicken Club. Be prepared to wait. Luckily you can grab a cup of coffee and roam around the 5 stories of RH and lounge on the comfy couches. We will be... visiting again next time we are in Chicago! More

The atmosphere is great. The atrium with the plants Is beautiful. There is always a wait, but it was worth it. The food was good and came out fast. I had the chicken which was extremely tasty. Great flavor. The only reason I didn't give... it 5 stars was the waitress. We had to seek her out several times, and ask other waiters for assistance. I would definitely recommend the restaurant, and we will be going back. More

Two of us dining for birthday dinner. We shared the following App Burrata w roasted pepper and sourdough bread -$25 Broccolini veg - $13 Salad. Shaves Veg, w pecan - $19 Main. Shaved rib eye sandwich w au jus - $30 Frites, w Truffle, parm,... aioli - $20 Now we’re at $107 before wine. Each had two glasses of Tempranillo, one of the cheapest reds offered, at $20 Per glass = $80 TOTAL $187 BEFORE tax and tip You can see, for a reasonable supper, nothing spectacular, we spent over $200, including tax and a 20% tip. The environment is indeed sweet- a rooftop with cozy alcoves, and a sweet view of Edina metro, from the roof. The food was good, the service was good. But two of us shared all of the aforementioned, it was a reasonable supper, not a celebration feast! And so, be prepared to spend a lot of money if you come. I would suggest come for a drink and an app, and then go over to Galleria aforesaid dinner at one of their restaurants. More
