  • 1 pair of scissors
  • 1 piece of paper

Snowflake paper folding instructions

  • Click 'Generate printable snowflake template.' checkbox above app before generating your snowflake. This will create a printable template.
  • Fold one corner to the perpendicular edge of the sheet to form two right triangles.
  • No scissors or shaky hands? If you don’t have scissors or have difficulty cutting a straight line, you can use your fingernails to create a sharp crease by folding the excess over on both sides. Slightly wetting the edge with your tongue or a small damp paper towel or sponge will help tear the edge.
  • If using a printed template, put the pattern face down and the blank side face up.
  • Fold a triangle using the original crease from making your square.
  • Fold the new triangle in half to create another triangle.
  • Fold the new triangle into three smaller equal sized triangles, fold the left and right sides inward. This part is a bit tricky to get right, so don't crease too hard until you've got the folds right.
  • Cut excess paper from triangle thirds to form parallel edges
  • Cut away from the edges to create shapes.
  • Unfold and enjoy your beautiful snowflake.

How to make beautiful easy paper snowflakes for winter & Christmas decorations! Simple paper crafts for kids & family. 12 best free templates!

Today we are revisiting this beautiful paper craft for everyone and favorite winter activity for kids: how to make 6 pointed paper snowflakes that are easy enough for kids to cut, and elegant enough to decorate your home for winter and Christmas.

make beautiful easy paper snowflakes with best free templates

Since snowflakes in nature are 6 pointed, that’s what we will make today. You can use the free templates to make 8 pointed snowflakes, with a slightly different fold in Step 3.

Materials and tools:.

  • Regular 8.5 x 11 copy paper and mixed color papers (NOT CARD STOCK) work great for making paper snowflakes. If the paper is too thick, it can be difficult to cut through the layers after folding.
  • Scissors, and (optional) pencil and eraser for drawing the patterns before cutting.

If you want to make 3D paper snowflakes, here’s our tutorial on how to make big lighted 3D snowflakes.

Make giant lighted snowflake pendants from paper bags or white paper. Easy tutorial with free templates. Beautiful decor for holidays and year round!

Step 1: fold a square piece of paper into a triangle

Start with a square piece of paper. Fold the square diagonally in half to form a triangle.

make a square sheet of paper from rectangular 8.5" x 11" Letter size paper

You can also easily make a square sheet of paper from any rectangular paper such as 8.5″ x 11″ Letter size. Just fold one corner to meet the opposite edge, forming a triangle, and cut the excess paper outside the triangle, as shown in photo above.

Step 2: fold a smaller triangle

Fold the large triangle (from Step 1) in half to make a smaller triangle

Fold the large triangle (from Step 1) in half to make a smaller triangle. As shown along the dotted line.

Step 3:  fold the triangle into a wedge

Helpful tip: as we fold the triangle into smaller triangles / wedge shapes, we are dividing the square paper into equal parts through the center point. You can create 6-pointed, 8-pointed, or 12-ponted snowflakes etc, just keep folding from the apex which is also the very center of the paper.

how to fold 6 pointed paper snowflakes to cut

To make 6-pointed paper snowflakes , divide the small triangle into three equal sections at the 90 degree apex point (also the center of the square paper), each section has a 30-degree angle.

You can use a protractor, or just estimate the size of the sections, which is what we did here. It’s quite easy, check out the video tutorial above if you are not sure about this step.

fold paper snowflakes to cut

Fold the left section towards the front.  Then the right section. Try to match all the edges as closely as possible.  Now we are ready to cut our snowflakes.

If you want to make 8-pointed snowflakes , you would fold the small triangle in 1/4, instead of 1/3 at the apex point, and proceed to Step 4.

Step 4: how to cut simple paper snowflakes

how to cut simple paper snowflake for kids

The possibilities are endless here. You can cut any shapes on this folded wedge ( just keep the shapes connected at places along the side edges) and be delighted as you open the paper into a big snowflake!

It is helpful to draw a design on the wedge first with light pencil lines , then cut it out, especially if you want to make elegant paper snowflakes for winter and Christmas decorations.

How do you flatten paper snowflakes?

elegant paper snowflakes for winter & Christmas

Keep your paper snowflake sandwiched between pages of a large book or magazine fora day or two. This will flatten the paper snowflakes, and is also a great way to store them.

What can you do with paper snowflakes?

You can tape them to windows, walls, and doors, make a snowflake table runner, use them on your gift bags and gift boxes, make holiday and Christmas cards, etc.

How to stiffen paper snowflakes?

You don’t need this step to hang the snowflakes, but if you want a little extra weight and stiffness, it’s very easy to do!

How to stiffen paper snowflakes.

Mix together 1 part room temperature water, 2 part cornstarch or flour starch, and 2 part white glue . ( No need to cook the starch.)

What You'll Need

  • 8.5-by-12-inch paper

How to Make Paper Snowflakes

Fold your paper to make a square..

The easiest way to cut the paper into a perfect square is to fold one corner of the paper to meet the opposite edge, creating a triangle and a rectangle. Then, fold the rectangle into the center, creasing along the edge of the triangle.

Cut a square shape.

Open up the piece of paper and cut off the rectangle. You now have a perfect square.

Fold again to create a small triangle.

Fold your paper diagonally, creating a triangle, then fold it in half again to form a smaller triangle.

Fold the triangle into thirds.

Fold the triangle into thirds, being careful to line up the left and right edges of the paper. Trim off the bottom points by cutting along the horizontal edge.

Design your snowflake.

With the paper still folded, create your paper snowflake design. Experiment with different shapes, sizes, and styles to create a variety of designs and patterns. Have fun with it!

Cut carefully along the stencil.

Cut out your paper snowflake pattern, making sure to keep some of the folded edges intact or your snowflake will fall apart.

Reveal your final snowflake.

Carefully unfold the paper to reveal your unique paper snowflake. That's it! Now you have festive paper snowflakes you can use as creative touches for wrapping holiday gifts, winter wonderland home decor, and more.

How to Make Paper Snowflakes in 6 Easy Steps

By lucie grace | dec 16, 2021.

Making paper snowflakes is a fun, easy DIY activity.

The holiday season is a great time to spruce up your home with some DIY Christmas decorations . Making your own paper snowflakes to hang around the house is an accessible activity for all ages—you can keep them simple, or make things more complicated with themed designs . Here are quick and easy instructions on how to make the perfect paper snowflakes.

Materials Needed to make a paper snowflake:

A4 sheets of white paper Pencil or pen Scissors

1. Make an even square.

Grab your A4 sheet of paper and lay it flat and horizontal in front of you. Take the top right corner of the sheet and fold it so the right edge of the paper is perfectly lined up along the bottom of the sheet, forming a triangle. Cut the excess rectangle of paper off of the left edge by folding the left edge of paper in then using the scissors to cut along that fold. Then take your triangle and open up the fold to reveal the perfect square.

2. Fold—then fold again.

Take your square sheet of white paper and fold it in half to create a triangle, creasing along the fold gently with your hand. Then take the newly formed triangle and fold it in half again to make a smaller triangle, again flattening the folded crease with your hand to make the shape nice and tidy and flat.

3. Perfect your triangle.

A well-formed triangle is key to making a good paper snowflake.

Take your triangle and carefully fold it into equal thirds. This should form a thin triangle, with all the layers lining up on top of one another. Use the blunt edge of your scissors to flatten the edges so that the triangle is neat and tidy. If there are any uneven bits along the unfolded edge at the bottom you can trim them off.

4. Draw your design.

Select your pencil or pen and  draw shapes along the creased edges of your still-folded triangle. You might want to draw semi-circles or little triangles; these will open into circles and diamonds once cut.

5. Cut carefully.

Use your scissors to carefully and slowly cut out the shapes you’ve sketched on your triangle. Take your time, be precise, and watch where you place your fingers to avoid accidental snips!

6. Unfold and display your snowflake.

You can use your paper snowflakes to decorate homemade holiday cards.

Once you’re happy with the shapes you’ve cut out and put the scissors away, it’s time to open up your paper snowflake. Brush all the cuttings to one side, then unfold the triangle slowly and completely. Gently flatten the snowflake shape with your hand to ease the folds out, then display your creation around the house.

Each snowflake is unique and so will be the ones you make! Whether it's December 24th or July 24th, these snowflakes are beautiful and quite easy to make; all you'll need is some paper and a pair of scissors. Because of their simplicity and aesthetic appeal, paper snowflakes are a fantastic craft idea for kids and adults alike.

Round Snowflake

Image titled Make a Paper Snowflake Step 1

  • If you found that confusing, fold one side over about 1/3 of the way and then fold the other side over to cover the first side. Any better?
  • When you're handling your soon-to-be snowflake, always keep the point down. This is the center of your snowflake.

Angular Snowflake

Image titled Make a Paper Snowflake Step 7

  • At all steps in this method make sure your creases are firm and straight. If they're not clean and symmetrical, you may end up with a wonky snowflake.
  • At this point, you may fold it again to create a different, much smaller, base for your snowflake. Experiment! However, for kids, folding it again renders it much more difficult to work with.
  • You may find it useful to hold on to the center of the snowflake -- the very tip. Though you can cut it off and the snowflake will hold together! The more paper you cut off, the flimsier it will be -- not necessarily a bad thing.
  • If you're not happy with your pattern, fold it back up and take a few more whacks at the paper. Problem solved.

A few quick snips with the tips of your scissors is all it takes to make a paper snowflake. Start with a square piece of paper —then follow our step-by-step tutorial on how to fold, cut, and create a six-pointed snowflake. Kids can happily occupy themselves by cutting snowflakes out by the dozens. Then adults can step in to help decorate the Christmas tree, gifts, windows, and, walls. Together, you can watch your family's own gentle blizzard materialize.

To make a paper snowflake, you need two essential craft supplies: paper and a pair of scissors. When choosing paper, remember: lightweight paper—wrapping paper, tissue paper, or crepe paper—is lighter and easy to cut but more fragile for decorating. Medium to heavy weight paper—butcher paper, card stock, or text-weight poster paper—is harder to cut but is more sturdy for decorating.

What You'll Need

  • Paper (Martha Stewart "Snowflake" Paper Pad, 12" by 12")
  • Craft scissors
  • Snowflake templates (optional)

Instructions

Start with a square piece of paper.

To cut a perfect square from a standard 8-by-11-inch sheet of paper, fold paper into a right-angled triangle; trim off excess.

Fold paper in half diagonally to make a triangle.

Fold paper triangle in half so that the pointed corners meet.

Fold paper triangle in thirds, overlapping the lefthand pointed corner over the triangle.

Overlap the righthand pointed corner over the triangle. (Note: You may need to adjust these folds a little to get the sides to match up, so don't crease the paper until the folds are just right.)

Trim the pointed ends so the paper triangle looks as shown.

Cut your folded paper with variations of cutouts. (Tip: The ones with straight lines are easier to make than the ones with curvy lines.)

Optional: If using one of our downloadable templates: scale to your paper size, print, and cut out. Staple template to folded paper in areas to be cut out and use craft scissors to cut off uncovered portion and along all solid lines.

Unfold it gently. Don't worry if your snowflake isn't exact: No two snowflakes are ever alike.

To smooth out any creases from folding, lightly iron one paper snowflake at a time on a low setting. You can also spritz a little spray starch to stiffen and flatten out the snowflakes.

There is something magical about creating art from paper. Paper snowflakes are said to have originated in the Victorian era when paper snowflakes were given as gifts. Today, they're one of the most versatile and family-friendly holiday crafts. Try using paper squares of different sizes for snowflakes big and small. You can also add a little sparkle with glitter. Use your finished snowflakes to decorate the windows or string them together to make a garland. You can also use double-sided tape to stick them to mirrors or hang them from the center of a curtain rod to mimic falling snow.

Materials Needed

  • white printer paper or card stock
  • white, silver, clear or opalescent glitter
  • decoupage medium
  • chip or foam brush
  • dropcloth or plastic to protect work surface

Master the Paper Fold

The key to a good snowflake is folding technique. First, s tart with a square sheet of paper and fold it into a triangle (Image 1). Then, fold it in half again (Image 2). Next, fold the paper in half at the arrow but pull the tip of the triangle down like so (Image 3). Finally, fold the right side over the left (Image 4). Your folded paper should look like this (Image 5).

Start with a square sheet of paper and fold it into a triangle.

Square One: Start with a square sheet of paper and fold it into a triangle.

Fold in Half Again

Fold in Half Again: Lay that triangle like so, and fold it in half again.

Fold and Tug

Fold and Tug: Fold the paper in half at the arrow but pull the tip of the triangle down like so.

Fold it Over

Fold it Over: Fold the right side over the left.

Snowflake Fold

Your final piece of folded paper should look like this.

Cut and Add Shapes

Cut across the dotted line (Image 1). Cut patterns and shapes into each snowflake like so. I even added a dog silhouette, bottom right (Image 2).

Optional: Add Some Sparkle

Using the brush, apply a thin layer of decoupage medium and sprinkle with glitter. Allow the glue to full dry, then place your snowflakes under a heavy book to flatten the paper.

With the foam brush, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge and sprinkle with glitter. Once dry, place your snowflakes under a heavy book to flatten.

Two-layer Papercut Snowflake Generator

Here’s a little online snowflake generator called Fr0zenSystem . It can generate any number of nice two-layer paper snowflake shapes. These can then be cut on your Glowforge and stacked together. The top layer is only cut. The bottom, intended to be cut from something like colored poster board layer or translucent vellum paper, is both engraved and cut.

It’s also possible to make three-layer, two-sided snowflakes by cutting two of the top layer and putting one on each side of the engraved layer. If you use translucent material for the central layer, you’ll only need to engrave it on one side. If you use opaque material like poster board, you’ll need to engrave both sides.

Fr0zenSystem is what is called a “fork” of the original open source project by bleeptrack . I’ve modified and reworked it in a number of ways. In particular, it now makes .svg files that are directly usable with a Glowforge.

How to Use the System

When you go to the system’s web page you’ll see the image of a generated snowflake:

SystemScreenshot1

If you click on the snowflake, the image will unstack the two layers so you can see the back layer more easily:

SystemScreenshot2

Clicking on the regenerate button will make a new random snowflake. You can also enter someone’s name and birthday and click on the regenerate button to create the unique snowflake that corresponds to what you entered. To go back to generating random snowflakes, just clear out the names and birthday.

When you have a snowflake you’d like to cut, click on the download button. This will bring up a dialog that lets you save the current snowflake as a Glowforge-compatible .svg file. Next, upload it in the usual way to the Glowforge GFUI. In the GFUI, select everything and use the scaling tools to make the flake the size you want. Next position the two layers over your material and set the parameters you’ll use for each step. I like to place both kinds of materials next to each other on a slightly sticky backing board. When everything’s ready to go, it looks like this:

GFUIScreenshot

Here I’m using blue poster board for the back layer and white cardstock for the front. The operation settings will vary depending on your material, of course, and on where you like the balance between speed and power. As has been widely discussed, faster with more power often results in less char than slower with less power. But going fast around sharp corners can lead to cuts with wobbles in them.

As always, laser cutting thin material works best if the material is first stuck to a flat, smooth backing of some sort, so the air assist doesn’t get under it. I use a piece of waste pasteboard covered with laser-compatible contact cement that allows material to be repositioned. I’ve successfully used both 3M spray adhesive and rubber cement but like the 3M coating better because it stays tacky for a long time and is just sticky enough to hold things in place during cutting but not so sticky as to make removing the cut pieces hard. I use a craft knife to get under the edge of the pieces to be removed.

FinishedSnowflake

Bug reports and suggestions for extensions or improvements are more than welcome.

Oh, one more thing. Since the code is all open source under a very non-restrictive license , you’re free to use it and the .svg files it generates for just about whatever you can think up.

Very nice share. Excited to give it a try!

The final product from that is a beautiful thing…and a generous share from you. Thank you.

So the program was designed to collect names and birth dates I guess?

No, not hardly. And trying to do that in a small open source program would pretty quickly be uncovered. Besides, nothing needs to be entered if you just want a random snowflake.

If you do enter a name and/or date, they’re used locally (in your browser) as input to a hash function to determine which of 2^128 snowflakes to generate.

Lovely share! Thank you

If it’s not using the identifying information for anything other than a hash, why not just ask for a random seed word? If you’re trying to get this used as much as possible it’s best to remove any potential hurdles… I saw the name and birthdate fields and immediately put my guard up.

It’s a cool thing you’ve made, and I want to give it a whole hearted thumbs up, but with the fields as they are I just can’t.

Also, I haven’t tried it yet, but if you’re asking for consistent fields won’t you get the same hash each time for a given person? Is that the idea, to make a nonrandom seed so that the results are reproduceable?

Thanks! This was worthy of a bookmark.

That’s very cool! Thanks for sharing and I can’t wait to give it a try!

And this is why we can’t have fun things anymore.

Don’t worry, I’ll give it a whole hearted thumbs up.

And if you want to see my special snowflake: Christopher Masto 07/14/1975

By this, you mean unfettered capitalism and abuse by internet entities that sell your data and use it in ways that are too harsh to get into here? Then yes, we agree. Those entities that have taught me (and you, I hope) to mistrust anyone who is asking for identifying information for what appears to be no reason.

I think it’s entirely reasonable to be skeptical here. I shouldn’t have to go through the code of the open source project to find out what they’re doing with my information, nor should I take it on trust that how it’s currently being used won’t change.

I stand by my position: if the data is a simple hash generator, make it something like “enter random words”, or better yet make it fields that are autopopulated with random words that you can edit. Asking for user input here has two major drawbacks: more work for the end user and also puts many users on the defensive. If @dehne1 wants as many people as possible to use it, making those relatively simple changes would go a long way to removing roadblocks. It’s win-win.

There are many valid reasons not to want random people to know these pieces of information, especially for people who are in higher risk categories. Privacy concerns aren’t some imagined issue.

No, I mean cynicism and paranoia.

It literally works out of the box without putting anything in those fields, so I find the argument of “I saw some optional fields, so I immediately assumed evil intent and closed the browser” a bit ridiculous. And to be honest, I’m probably reacting less to your reasonable suggestion to make a text field you can put anything you want in than to beerfaced’s “So the program was designed to collect names and birth dates I guess?” comment, which to me comes across a rather rude way to respond to someone who did a bunch of work and is sharing their art for free with the community.

And that’s why I was so annoyed at not being able to use ChatGPT without giving them my personal cell phone number , which is something I go out of my way to protect because the threat model (getting more spam calls) is relevant to me.

People who want to protect their name and birthdate are of course welcome to do so and don’t need a reason or my permission.

My objection is to immediately assigning ill intent, especially for an open source project, and where the most likely explanation by a long, long shot is that they just put that because it’s fun and cute to make a “personalized” snowflake. Because even if they were collecting names and birthdays and somehow separating the real ones from the garbage, I am at a loss to imagine what they would do with them. And I’m actually pretty cynical and paranoid.

For those who aren’t hanging out on Twitter: Bleeptrack was also talking about this during development on Mastodon – @bleeptrack @vis.social – and has a YouTube video about the project:

paper snowflake generator

I haven’t used either generator but, I see the original also outputs SVGs. Is there something different about the SVGs output from this fork?

Oh, my. I’m beginning to regret sharing this thing.

The idea is to optionally allow people to generate their own special snowflake by entering a name and date, while also allowing those who, for whatever reason, do not want to enter data like that to get any number of random snowflakes by not entering any data at all.

For those who are wary of entering information associated with real people, but want to use the generator to generate particular snowflakes, I see four alternatives.

Only enter partial information, e.g., just a first and last name or just a date. Or maybe just a first name and date.

Enter made up names and dates. E.g., Charlie Brown 10/30/1946 Or Verschiedine Moglischkeiten 1/1/2023

Generate a random number or string of characters using a trusted method for generating a hash of a real person’s name and birthday and enter the result in one of the name fields.

Make up a random seed word or phrase and enter it into one of the name fields.

This last alternative is essentially what you suggested. I chose not to do it that way because it doesn’t make the resulting snowflake “the one” belonging to a person.

Yes, entering the exact same characters and/or dates into the fields, will result in the exact same snowflake every time. As you suggest, that’s the idea: to choose which of the universe of possible snowflakes is in some (hash-function-mediated) sense that person’s “own special” snowflake. For those who would like that.

Finally, I’m really not trying to get this used as much as possible, I thought it was fun and might be of use to some part of the community, so I shared it. And it’s open source, so it’s also open to anyone who wants to change it.

Imagine harder. It’s not just name and birthday, it’s name and birthday attached to a ton of metadata – IP addresses, all manner of browser information, etc. It can be used to correlate data in really nasty ways.

It’s not cynical or paranoid to understand the risks here – they are definitely present.

That’s too bad, it looks like a nice gizmo. That’s the thing about sharing stuff (projects, art whatever) online, you don’t control how people will react once it’s out there. Any of my concerns or suggestions aren’t meant to discourage you from sharing or making stuff, I apologize if that’s how I made you feel.

Yes, what’s different about the output of the original is that it needs “tweeking” in a program capable of editing svgs to be used with a Glowforge. In particular, the two layers are directly on top of one another and have the same stroke colors for the cuts. And the “engraves” aren’t what the GF thinks of as engraves.

It’s entirely possible to use bleeptrack’s original version, you just need edit the output a bit. Also, the original version doesn’t have the ability to generate a non-random snowflake. Should you want that, of course.

Sorry you consider my comment rude. There has been much discussion over the years wrt how someone’s typed comment comes across. Since there is no facial expression or verbal inflection it can be interpreted different ways by different people and even by the same person on different days depending on their state of mind at the time of reading. Consider a situation where you and I were sitting around discussing this subject. You explained it was asking for names and birthdates. I turned to you, eyebrows raised and said "So the program was designed to collect names and birth dates I guess?” Would you consider that rude in that context? I am always considering the intent when asked for information I consider not relevant. I always think back to that old saying: “If you are not paying for it, you’re not the customer; you’re the product being sold.”

I’m just going to apologize to everyone involved and recuse myself from this discussion. I should have spotted the signs earlier, but it’s obvious to me in retrospect: I am running at a bit of a sleep deficit and one of the things I do under stress is get grumpy and start arguing with people on the Internet. I’m probably capable of a productive conversation with people about online privacy, but I’m not capable of it today and in any case this is someone else’s topic on Free Laser Designs, not my soapbox to shout from.

Make Your Own Virtual Snowflake – No Paper Needed!

This post was first published in January of 2011 and I shared how to use the Barkley Make-A-Flake online widget as a fun way to make your own virtual snowflakes. However the Make-A-Flake widget ran on Adobe Flash and Adobe Flash is going the way of the dinosaur. As of December 31, 2020 Adobe Flash will no longer be supported, content will be blocked from using Flash, and we are all advised to uninstall Flash if it’s still on our systems. So it looks like no more Barkley Make-A-Flake virtual snowflake fun. But no worries – I have another option for you!

How to make a virtual online snowflake

Yes, I know you can always get out a real piece of paper and scissors if you’re looking for some frugal homemade snowflake fun – BUT – sometimes it’s fun to play online and make virtual snowflakes too. If that sounds like fun, you can try a site called MandalaMaker and the link is below that goes directly to their online snowflake maker page: Check it out here = = = > > >  MandalaMaker – Snowflake Maker

Here’s a few screenshots of how it works, and I’ve included a video below as well. It’s not quite as user friendly as the Make-A-Flake, but it’s still fun and once you get the hang of it, it’s rather addicting too!

When you begin your online snowflake, you’ll be greeted by a white triangle, just like you would start with a folded triangle piece of paper.

Then to cut out shapes, you’ll click with your mouse and get a green dot to begin your shape. As you move your mouse and keep clicking, each click will create a red dot on a new corner of your shape, until you again click on the green dot to close the shape. This creates the cut-out.

You can make as many of these cut-outs as you wish. You can make the cutouts along the edges of the white triangle, or inside the white triangle, and you may even find it helpful to begin clicking in the outer blue area to make your shape. It make take a few tries, but before long you’ll have the hang of it and you’ll be wasting time artistically making lots of snowflakes. 🙂

When you’re done making the cutouts, click on the “Make Snowflake” button on the right hand side of the page and your pretty new virtual snowflake will appear on the left.  TA-DA !
