Scholarships, Awards, & Funding

  • Graduate School
  • Scholarships, Awards & Funding

The University of British Columbia offers and administers many programs that provide financial help to graduate students.

Types of Funding

Merit-based funding.

Merit-based funding refers to financial support, such as awards, scholarships etc., offered in recognition of a student's achievements. These usually require an application to be adjudicated in a competitive process with the top-ranked students receiving the funding offers.

Need-Based Funding

Need-based funding refers to programs that provide eligible students who cannot meet basic educational costs, usually based on their income, with financial assistance, e.g. loans, bursaries, and emergency funding. These funds originate from donors and provincial and federal governments. Need-based funding for graduate students is administered by Enrolment Services.

The Graduate Awards department at the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies is responsible for administering merit-based (also known as competition-based) graduate awards at the Vancouver campus of the University of British Columbia, as well as a limited number of non-merit-based awards such as the International Tuition Award, President's Academic Excellence Initiative PhD Award, and Graduate Student Travel and Research Dissemination Fund. Graduate Awards manages a number of award competitions each year and administers payment of both internally- and externally-funded awards.

Sources of Funding

Program funding packages.

Students should check their degree program listing on our website at  Graduate Degree Programs .  Depending on the degree program, there may be program funding packages offered by the UBC department.  The degree program listing may also include statistics on average funding in the program.

Awards organized through the UBC Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

Graduate students can view the awards opportunities that are available for students to apply to on our website at Award Opportunities .

  • Using the filters at the top of the link, students can update the results to the awards that are relevant to their specific academic profile

Awards offered by UBC programs or departments

Each department/program may have awards that they can offer to their students.  Ask specifically about GSI  and department recommended  awards.

PhD students should also inquire about the Four Year Fellowship  and the minimum funding policy for PhD students.

There are many awards offered by external agencies that students can apply for.  However, the key external funding that students should be aware of is Tri-Agency (CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC) funding.

Applicants should review the Tri-Agency award databases:

  • National Sciences and Engineering Research Council
  • Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council
  • Canadian Institute of Health Research

Agency award competition application deadlines are typically in the Fall each year. Interested applicants should check our database for UBC-specific essential guidance for applying for Tri-Agency funding.

Many foreign governments provide support to their citizens in pursuing education abroad. International applicants should check the various governmental resources in their home country, such as the Department of Education, for available scholarships.

UBC, through the support of its many donors and through funding provided by the provincial and federal governments, offers a wide range of programs to provide financial assistance to eligible students who cannot meet basic educational costs.

In-depth information about needs-based graduate awards such as loans, bursaries and other types of financial aid is available from Enrolment Services .

Please contact an Enrolment Services Advisor if you’d like to discuss your situation.

Important note : The below content is provided for informational purposes only.  The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies is not involved with student service appointments.  Student service appointments are managed by individual graduate programs.  Graduate students who are interested in Research Assistant or Teaching Assistant opportunities should contact their UBC program or department.

Student service appointments are intended to help properly qualified students of UBC meet the cost of their studies at the university. Student appointments may involve part-time duties in teaching, research, or other academic activities.

Appointments: general

Normally, only those students registered full-time in the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies are eligible. Appointments offered to students prior to their admission to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies are contingent upon admission. Student service appointments are coordinated and administered at the graduate program level.

Categories of appointment

There are five categories under which graduate students may be appointed:

  • Graduate Teaching Assistant I
  • Graduate Teaching Assistant II
  • Graduate Research Assistant
  • Graduate Academic Assistant.

For descriptions please see the Academic Calendar .

Different types of student funding are treated differently with regard to taxation:

  • Awards and Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA) are coded as fellowship earnings and tax is not withheld by UBC against those earnings
  • Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA) are coded as 20% fellowship earnings (no tax withheld) and 80% regular earnings (tax is withheld by UBC)
  • Markers and Graduate Academic Assistants (GAA) are coded as 100% regular earnings (tax is withheld by UBC)

In February of each year, UBC will provide students with a T4A form for all fellowship earnings and a T4 form for all regular earnings received during the previous calendar year (January to December). Students are responsible for filing income tax returns on these earnings.

Awards and Other Sources of Funding

Most external funding agencies have clearly defined policies regarding additional funding for award recipients. Funding agencies might restrict the amount students are eligible to receive from other awards, number of hours they can spend on work unrelated to their research, the type of research grants used to pay any additional Research or Teaching Assistantships, etc. It is the award recipients' responsibility to comply with the rules and regulations of their award.

Effective March 2018, G+PS no longer limits the number of employment hours for any award holders.

UBC has determined that, due to domestic and international employment and taxation laws, students cannot be hired as Teaching Assistants unless they are physically located in Canada. Specific questions about TA appointments should be directed to your UBC graduate program.

The possibility to pursue work to supplement income may depend on the demands the program has on students. It should be carefully weighed if work leads to prolonged program durations or whether work placements can be meaningfully embedded into a program.

International students enrolled as full-time students with a valid study permit can work on campus for unlimited hours and work off-campus for no more than 20 hours a week.

A good starting point to explore student jobs is the UBC Work Learn program or a Co-Op placement .

Students with taxable income in Canada may be able to claim federal  or provincial  tax credits.

Canadian residents with RRSP accounts may be able to use the Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) which allows students to withdraw amounts from their registered retirement savings plan (RRSPs) to finance full-time training or education for themselves or their partner.

Applying for an award

Below is information about how to apply for awards offered by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies.

There are hundreds of awards that UBC graduate students can apply for, so it’s not possible to list all the specific awards each category of student is eligible for.  Each award has its own unique eligibility requirements that will not be applicable to all students.  For example, an award may be limited to only Canadian citizens, or to students in a specific field of research.

However, the filters on the Award Opportunities page allow students to narrow down which awards they might be eligible for.  Click on each award result and view the “Eligibility Requirements” to confirm eligibility for the specific award.

Coursework only degree programs : Almost all of the awards listed on the Award Opportunities webpage have research as part of their eligibility requirements.  Graduate students in “coursework only” degree programs (such as MPT) are recommended to contact their UBC department to find out what award funding their department may have for “coursework only” degree program students.

Degree programs that are not administered by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies : Degree programs that are not administered by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (such as MEng and MEL programs) are not eligible for any award funding listed on the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website.  Graduate students in this type of degree program are recommended to contact their UBC department to find out what award funding their department may have for their degree program.

Peer-Review and External Funding in Graduate Formation

As you progress from a consumer to a producer of knowledge through your graduate training, you will be incorporated into scientific institutions more and more. Some of the most fundamental precepts of scientific endeavours are the notion that we are building on the work of others in a cumulative fashion and that peer review is the most realistic but also consistent way to evaluate scholarship. The degree to which these precepts are applied vary significantly from discipline to discipline, but the structures that have been built around these principles are broadly in place with funders and funding applications reflect these structures.

Applications for funding are an important mechanism by which you receive feedback on (proposed) research. This feedback and similar selection processes will accompany you throughout your research career, it is thus important to begin to understand funding mechanisms early on to give yourself to benefit from them, but also to learn more about the scientific enterprise.

All fellowship applications can be thought of as an opportunity to apply and refine skills that you have learned elsewhere in your graduate formation. The specifics of a given fellowship are simply an attempt by a funding agency to turn its expectations of research and people that are to be funded into a format that can be handled by academic adjudication processes.

Defining Excellence: Your Past Achievements and your Future Promise

Almost all fellowship applications are built around two main aspects of excellence: your record of past achievement and the promise of your future research. Sometimes, additional criteria are specified.

Note that competition formats are fundamentally built around the desire to be able to select excellent applications. Materials submitted or forms to be filled out are thus designed to elicit information that adjudicators can use in determining the fundability of one application over another. Funders invest in descriptions of the criteria of excellence that are to be applied in order to provide guidance to applicants as well as adjudicators. You can assume that there are no secret instructions to prefer one kind of applicant or proposal over another.

Note that almost all competitions are looking for excellence, not mere eligibility. Fundamentally, it is your task to communicate the enthusiasm you feel about your research in such a way that adjudicators and committees are convinced that your proposed research will make important contributions to the collective academic project and that you are the best/best-prepared person to conduct this research.

Planning Ahead

Given the centrality of peer review processes to academic activities, you should be thinking about some elements of applications at all times. For example, there will be many occasions when you will want to be able to persuade an audience of the importance of the contribution that your research will be making, whether that is a supervisor with whom you’re discussing next steps, a conference audience, or a job interview panel.

  • Always scan for funding opportunities. Some of these will be sent to your by your program or by professional associations or funders directly, many of them are listed on the Graduate + Postdoctoral Studies website but you should also constantly and actively look for them.
  • When you identify opportunities, work backwards from deadlines. Allow generous time for referees to respond to requests, to circulate drafts of materials to peers and colleagues, to turn away from applications for some time, and to be able to submit to competitions early rather than at the last minute.
  • Read instructions very carefully to understand the intent behind competitions and how it might be relevant to you. Recall that instructions may change from one application cycle to the next, so always base your planning on the most recent version. Re-read the instructions regularly.
  • Plan for applications in close conversation with your supervisor, but also with program advisors and staff.
  • Build relationships with potential writers of reference letters. Ongoing conversations with a professor in your program, including but not limited to your supervisor, are a much stronger basis for a request for a letter of support than a sudden request. If you feel comfortable doing so, have conversations with letter writers about their contribution to your application. Remind them of evidence that they might cite in a letter to substantiate their assessment. Especially for letter writers from outside of North America, explain the importance of these letters to them and the expectation that they speak to the specifics of a competition and offer evidence of excellence in somewhat enthusiastic fashion. Review Tips for Soliciting Great Reference Letters
  • Planning ahead can be an important element in preserving your (mental) health and enthusiasm for research.

Put Yourself in an Adjudicator’s Position

Adjudicators are typically volunteering their time on committees and are dedicated to the fairness and consistency of adjudication processes. They are also often under time pressure.

  • You have to be enthusiastic about your research to have a chance at eliciting a reviewer’s enthusiasm. Keep crafting descriptions of your proposed research until your enthusiasm shines through.
  • Many competitions will exclude reviewers from your discipline/department from discussions (to avoid conflict of interest), so adjudicators will often not be experts on the specifics of your research and will only be familiar with your topic at a broad level. Write to a general audience in your broad area of research, not to subject experts.
  • Adjudicators rotate on and off committees, so don’t try to second guess committees. Be true to your research rather than targeting some imputed preferences among adjudicators.
  • Offer adjudicators formatting and terminology that allows them to remember your application in a pile of dozens of files.
  • Be clear and concise in your prose.
  • What questions does your application raise? Answer them in a meaningful way. If you are switching disciplines for the next step in your research career, that’s great and will be obvious to reviewers, so explain why you’ve made that decision and what it means for your research. Often, it might be your background in areas of expertise or experience outside of your immediate field of study that will make you the best person to pursue a certain kind of research, let adjudicators see that!
  • Think about questions that adjudicators might ask specifically of CVs and other formal elements in an application. If you are listing a paper as “submitted” to a journal, why not add a date to give an adjudicator a chance to guestimate whether you might have a reply to a submission already? If you are listing co-authored work, offer a percentage of contributions, etc.
  • Adjudicators will increasingly search for elements of applications online. Don’t count on someone finding you, but consider what an adjudicator might find when they do search for you. Is your institutional webpage up-to-date? Does an online CV offer additional information that you cannot include in an application?

Write, Edit, Submit, Repeat

  • Don’t be discouraged if you are not selected in a competition. Most competitions are highly competitive so you cannot expect to win them all. Adjudicators often have to make very fine-grained distinctions between applications, especially those that are just above or below a cut off. Such distinctions are only a judgement of relative merit in a pool, not of the absolute merit of your plans.
  • Funding applications are a learned skill for almost all of us and practice helps.
  • Research is a social activity. Engage colleagues, course mates, campus resources in crafting your applications, we can all benefit from support from those around us.

Canada Graduate Scholarships — Master’s program

The objective of the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s (CGS M) program is to help develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies.

The CGS M program provides financial support to high-calibre scholars who are engaged in an eligible master’s or, in some cases, doctoral program in Canada (refer to  Eligibility for more information). This support allows these scholars to fully concentrate on their studies in their chosen fields.

To be eligible to apply, you must

  • be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada or a Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) as of the application deadline date
  • be enrolled in, have applied for or will apply for full-time admission * to an eligible graduate program at the master’s or doctoral level at a Canadian institution with a CGS M allocation
  • respect the internal deadline to apply for admission for your intended program of study—contact the faculty of graduate studies (or its equivalent) at the selected Canadian institution(s) for more detailed information
  • have completed, as of December 31 of the year of application
  • a master’s program
  • a doctoral program that you are entering directly from a bachelor’s program without having ever been enrolled in any graduate programs (direct-entry)
  • a combined master’s-doctoral program
  • a master’s program that will transition to an eligible doctoral program, either before or after award activation, with no master’s degree conferred (fast-track)
  • a master’s program for which the degree requirements will be completed before the end of the award, allowing the award to continue into an eligible doctoral program
  • or between 4 and 12 months of full-time study (or full-time equivalent) in an eligible master’s program for which the degree requirements will be completed before activation of the award at that same institution, allowing it to be activated during the first 12 months of the subsequent doctoral program for which you are requesting funding
  • not have held or be currently holding a CGS M scholarship from NSERC, CIHR or SSHRC
  • not have held or be currently holding an Indigenous Scholars Award and Supplement
  • Note: Institutions may, at their discretion, accept CGS M applications from individuals who have not obtained a first-class average; contact your proposed host institutions to determine their use of this eligibility criterion
  • Note: Should more than one application be submitted, the eligible application submitted first chronologically will be retained

*Refer to the Tri-agency research training award holder’s guide for details regarding part-time admission. **All studies credited toward the eligible program will be counted, whether or not they were completed at the degree-granting institution. Two terms of part-time study count as one term of full-time study.

Program of study eligibility

An eligible graduate program must include a significant research component that leads to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital and/or exhibit that is merit/expert-reviewed at the institutional level as a requirement for completion of the program.

Joint programs with a professional degree (for example, MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/MA, JD/PhD, MBA/PhD, MA/MBA) as well as clinically oriented programs of study , including clinical psychology, are eligible if they have a significant autonomous research component, as described above.

Master’s programs that are based only on course work are typically not eligible since they do not include a significant research component, as described above.

Given the specific requirements of certain disciplines, institutions are invited to contact the appropriate agency for guidance on the eligibility of programs of study.

Eligible locations of tenure

Without exception, CGS M awards are tenable only at eligible Canadian institutions .

Field of research and subject matter eligibility

NSERC, CIHR and SSHRC support and promote high-quality research in a wide variety of disciplines and areas, which are divided into broad fields of research (health, natural sciences and engineering, and social sciences and humanities). This includes research that bridges two or more disciplines or that requires the skills of several disciplines.

Equity, diversity and inclusion

The Tri-agency is acting on the evidence that achieving a more equitable, diverse and inclusive Canadian research enterprise is essential to creating the excellent, innovative and impactful research necessary to advance knowledge and understanding, and to respond to local, national and global challenges. This principle informs the commitments described in the Tri-agency statement on equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

Black student researchers

The Government of Canada has deployed additional funds to increase direct support for Black student researchers . CGS M applicants who self-identify as Black and provide consent in their application to be considered for funds designated for specific groups may be able to receive this funding through a scholarship as part of this initiative. Each agency has a limited number of additional CGS M awards reserved for this initiative.

For more information, consult the Frequently asked questions about the new Black scholars funding web page.

Application procedures

To apply to the CGS M program, you must complete and submit an application to up to three institutions using the Research Portal. Consult the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s program: Instructions for completing an application for more information on how to apply.

Eligible Canadian institutions are assigned a separate allocation of awards to offer from each agency. Institutions must respect the agency-specific allocation. Refer to the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s award allocations page for a list of allocations by institution and by agency.

Note: As the application deadline approaches, delays may occur due to a high volume of users on the Research Portal, which may prevent the timely submission of your application. It is your responsibility to strictly follow the instructions for completing an application . Requests to submit late applications will not be accepted.

Selection process

The faculty of graduate studies (or its equivalent) at each institution is responsible for coordinating the selection process for the CGS M applications. Refer to Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s program information and instructions for scholarships liaison officers for more information on the selection process.

Selection criteria

The merit review of CGS M applications will be carried out by institutions with an allocation and will be based on the following evaluation criteria:

Canada's grants for master's, PhD students haven't increased since 2003. These researchers want that changed

Annual stipends of $17,500 to $21,000 are 'definitely below the poverty line,' says grad student.

Social Sharing

Students doing graduate-level research say Canada risks losing its future scientists to other countries because the dollar amounts of annual grants have remained stagnant for nearly 20 years.

A Canada Graduate Scholarship from one of the three federal research funding agencies is $17,500 per year for a master's student or $21,000 per year for a doctoral student. Those amounts have not changed since 2003.

In return for that funding, the recipients are expected to work full-time on their research, and in some cases are explicitly banned from spending more than 10 hours per week on any other paid employment.

"Definitely below the poverty line in any capacity," said Sarah Laframboise, a PhD student in biochemistry at the University of Ottawa.

Laframboise is one of the organizers of a campaign called Support Our Science, calling on the Trudeau government to boost graduate student funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

Grad student funding crunch

The three federal agencies fund the research of thousands of grad students every year at universities across Canada.

  • Audio The “Support our Science” movement pushes to boost funding for young scientists

"These students really deserve a living wage," said Laframboise. "They're struggling to pay rent, tuition, all of these costs."

Grants haven't grown with inflation

Support Our Science has held a rally on Parliament Hill, presented a petition to the House of Commons and prepared a submission for the federal government's budget consultations.

The Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, François-Philippe Champagne, said he is aware of the call for more funding for graduate researchers.

"I'm very much seized about that. This is going to be part of our discussions with the minister of finance," Champagne told CBC News earlier in December, adding that students should "stay tuned" for the 2023 budget.

"It's clear that if we want to own the podium, we need to do more to support the researchers, the students and the scientists," said Champagne.

A man at a podium

He said the Trudeau government has invested in science and research, but Laframboise argues that those investments have not resulted in better annual funding to graduate students.

Her group wants the government to increase both the value and number of scholarships and fellowships that the three agencies give to graduate researchers.

"They often spend 40 to 60 hours a week in the lab doing their research," Laframboise said. "So when we look at it from this perspective, these students really deserve a living wage."

Inflation has eroded the value of the grants. If the $17,500 amount for a master's student researcher had risen with inflation since 2003, it would today be worth $26,140, according to the Bank of Canada's inflation calculator.

A feeling of 'generalized anxiety'

Jessica Reid, a master's student in fish ecology at Carleton University in Ottawa, says she has had to seek extra funding beyond her NSERC award to support her research and cover her costs.

"I'm one of the fortunate ones," Reid said in an interview. "There's just this feeling of generalized anxiety. Sometimes you are trying to make ends meet, or you're trying to decide between groceries and other things."

Female graduate students in white lab coats hold signs saying "We deserve a living wage" and "Livable wages."

When she learned that the NSERC grant to a master's student had not changed for nearly 20 years, Reid said she found it shocking.

"It's quite frustrating to hear that my research and my contributions aren't valued," she said. "You just can't help but feel a bit slighted."

Both Reid and Laframboise believe their research is important. Laframboise's biochemistry work focuses on cancer, using yeast.

"Yeast and humans share about 30 per cent of the same genes," she said. "I study a gene that in humans causes cancer, but in yeast we can study this in a much more robust, easy, cheaper way."

Reid is researching the impact of urban development on the fish of the Jock River, which flows into the Rideau River in Ottawa.

  • In Depth Black scientists won't stay in Canada without equitable research funding, experts say

She says the stagnant funding is a factor in Canadian students deciding to leave the country for graduate degrees.

"Feeling like you can't thrive or you just don't have the resources to stay in this field is definitely going to dampen Canada's research ability in the coming years," she said.

Government of Canada and partners invest over $28 million to support underrepresented early career health researchers

From: Canadian Institutes of Health Research

News release

Starting a research faculty career is challenging, with barriers such as racism and sexism making it even harder. Financial support, mentorship, and career training are all essential for providing the current generation of diverse trainees the opportunity to succeed as academics and researchers.

February 27, 2024 – Ottawa, ON – Canadian Institutes of Health Research

That is why today, Yasir Naqvi, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Mark Holland, Minister of Health, announced the results of Canada’s first Research Excellence, Diversity, and Independence (REDI) Early Career Transition Award. The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and partners are providing $28.4 million to support 43 early-career researchers focusing on health research in the areas of infectious and chronic disease, brain and mental health, aging, rare diseases, improving the health care system, and more.

For instance:

  • Dr. Rabia Khan from the University of British Columbia is researching how to address burnout in women physicians with intersectional identities.
  • Dr. Pamela Lagali from the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute is examining potential new treatments for retinal diseases that lead to vision loss and blindness.
  • Dr. Idowu B. Olawoye from the University of Western Ontario is tackling antimicrobial resistance, a growing problem in Canada and around the world.
  • Dr. Ralph-Sydney Mboumba Bouassa from the Institut du Savoir Montfort is examining the neglected threat of HPV and cervical cancer in non-vaccinated immigrants and refugee women from Sub-Saharan Africa living in Canada.

This new investment will support Black people and racialized women who are underrepresented as they transition to independent academic or research positions—increasing equity, diversity, and inclusion in health research. Ultimately, this will make Canada a healthier place for everyone.

“The transition from trainee to independent researcher is often the hardest stage of a researcher’s career, and factors such as racism and sexism make it even harder. With the REDI Early Career Transition Award, our government is investing in a diverse, inclusive, and talented pool of new researchers that will make invaluable contributions to health research in Canada.” The Honourable Mark Holland Minister of Health
“CIHR’s Institute of Infection and Immunity is thrilled to lead this transformative initiative in collaboration with partners. Faculty in academic and research institutions in Canada are tremendously talented, but do not reflect the diversity seen in the student population or the general population of Canada. The REDI Award addresses gaps in training and support and fosters diversity in the research community, which is important for excellence in research and improving the health of all people in Canada.” Dr. Charu Kaushic Scientific Director of the CIHR Institute of Infection and Immunity
“By dedicating new funding through the REDI Early Career Transition Award, CIHR is addressing systemic barriers to career development and directly valuing underrepresented researchers and the topics that they research. This award will help more trainees transition to faculty positions in academic institutions, making health research equitable, diverse, and inclusive.” Catherine MacLeod Acting President of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research

Quick facts

The CIHR REDI Early Career Transition Award aims to support diverse post-doctoral researchers, clinicians, and research associates over a 6-year period as they transition from trainees to independent academic or research appointments, where they can pursue independent research projects, supervise trainees and publish the results of their research.

This is the first-ever REDI Award. The funding is valued at $28.4 million and will support 43 researchers representing many areas of health research.

This investment was made possible thanks to support from partners including the Alzheimer Society of Canada, the Arthritis Society of Canada, the Azrieli Foundation, BrightFocus Foundation, Fighting Blindness Canada, JDRF Canada and the Kidney Foundation of Canada.

While this first round of the REDI Award focuses on providing support to Black people and racialized women, future competitions will have an expanded scope to support additional underrepresented groups.

Admission requirements for PhD programmes in Canada vary by institution and subject, but there are some general eligibility requirements. Prospective applicants must possess a Master’s degree in the same subject for admission to any doctoral programme. Besides this, the other general eligibility requirements for PhD in Canada are

It’s common to be asked for your Grade Point Average (GPA) when applying to a Canadian doctoral programme while submitting your academic transcripts. To get accepted into one of these programmes, applicants need at least a 3.0 GPA or higher. Students must also show that they have taken advanced courses in their field of study.

Graduate Admissions Tests

Universities and graduate schools use scores from the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) to assess potential students’ aptitude for higher learning. Requirements can change between universities, so be sure to do your research beforehand.

Language Requirements

Depending on your chosen province of study, a Canadian Doctoral degree can be attained in either English or French. While the majority of universities teach primarily in English, those located within Quebec for example may offer instruction exclusively in French.

If you are a native speaker or have already studied the language at the university level, that should be enough to meet the criteria. Otherwise, you must take and pass a language test before submitting your application as part of its requirements.

Work Experience

Having some experience in the field you are applying to can be beneficial, although it’s not always mandatory. Admissions committees may want to know that students have relevant work experience or volunteer activities in their chosen field prior to applying for a doctoral programme in Canada.

Research Statement

Applicants for PhDs are usually required to show a strong interest in research through their statement of purpose or a research proposal. This is an important part of the application process and should detail why you are applying for the programme, what you hope to gain from it, and your future goals. Having a good research statement can help strengthen your application.

Your resume should include the following information: academic achievements, work experience, extra-curricular activities, and awards. It’s important to provide an accurate and detailed description of your qualifications so that admissions committees can get a better idea of who you are and what you bring to the table.

Canadian universities may conduct a PhD interview as an assessment of your application and capability, or simply to become more acquainted with you. You must be prepared to answer questions about your chosen field and research, experience, interests and career aspirations. It is best to research potential topics of discussion before attending such an interview and practice as best you can.

Admission to a doctoral programme in Canada requires two or three academic references from previous professors or employers, who can be contacted for a reference only after you have received their permission. Ensure that your references are aware of their role in the application process so they can provide the most honest and accurate assessment of your abilities and knowledge.

Reaching Out to Potential Supervisors

Potential PhD students should research possible dissertation supervisors and acquaint themselves with the research areas of their prospective Schools prior to applying. This allows them to understand the type of research they would be expected to undertake and make an informed decision. Finally, make sure that you meet all the deadlines for your application and keep a track of all the documentation you are sending. This will help ensure that you submit a complete and accurate application package.

Waiver of compliance in any particular instance does not mean that we will waive compliance in the future. In order for any waiver of compliance with these Terms of Use to be binding, TC Global must provide you with written notice of such waiver through one of its authorized representatives.

Modification of Terms of Use

TC Global reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to modify or replace any of these Terms of Use, or change, suspend, or discontinue the Service (including without limitation, the availability of any feature, database, or content) at any time by posting a notice on the Site or by sending you notice through the Service or via email. First party cookies are the cookies served by the owner of the domain. In our case, that's TC Global. Any cookie we place ourselves is a "first-party cookie."

Third-party cookies are cookies placed on our domains by trusted partners that we've allowed to do so. These can be social media partners, advertising partners, security providers, and more. And they can be either "session cookies" or "permanent cookies":

Session cookies only exist until you close your browser, ending what's called your "session." Then they're deleted.

Permanent cookies have a range of lifespans and stay on your device after the browser is closed. On the Site, we try to only serve permanent cookies (or allow permanent cookies to be served by third parties) that have a limited lifespan. However, for security reasons or in other exceptional circumstances, sometimes we may need to give a cookie a longer lifespan.

Web browser cookies may store info such as your IP address or other identifiers, your browser type, and info about the content you view and interact with on digital services. By storing this info, web browser cookies can remember your preferences and settings for online services and analyze how you use them.

Along with cookies, we also use tracking technologies that are very similar. Our Site may contain small transparent image files or lines of code that record how you interact with them. These include "web beacons," "scripts," "tracking URLs," or "software development kits" (known as SDKs):

Web beacons have a lot of different names. They might also be known as web bugs, tracking bugs, tags, web tags, page tags, tracking pixels, pixel tags, 1x1 GIFs, or clear GIFs. In short, these beacons are a tiny graphic image of just one pixel that can be delivered to your device as part of a web page request, in an app, an advertisement, or an HTML email message. They can be used to retrieve info from your device, such as your device type, operating system, IP address, and the time of your visit. They are also used to serve and read cookies in your browser or to trigger the placement of a cookie.

Scripts are small computer programs embedded within our web pages that give those pages a wide variety of extra functionality. Scripts make it possible for the website to function properly. For example, scripts power certain security features and enable basic interactive features on our website. Scripts can also be used for analytical or advertising purposes. For example, a script can collect info about how you use our website, such as which pages you visit or what you search for.

Tracking URLs are links with a unique identifier in them. These are used to track which website brought you to the Site. An example woold be if you clicked from a social media page, search engine, or one of our affiliate partners' websites.

Software Development Kits (SDKs) are part of our apps' source code. Unlike browser cookies, SDK data is stored in the app storage. They're used to analyze how the apps are being used or to send personalized push notifications. To do this, they record unique identifiers associated with your device, like your device ID, IP address, in-app activity, and network location.

All these tracking technologies are referred to as "cookies" here in this Cookie Statement. However, no Personal Information identifying the user is collected nor any data capture mechanisms are employed. The user may change browser settings to accept or reject cookies on personal preference. You have the ability to accept or decline cookies. Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually modify the browser setting to decline cookies if you so prefer. If you choose to decline cookies, you may not be able to sign in or use other interactive features of the Site that may depend on cookies. If you choose to accept cookies, you also have the ability to later delete cookies that you have accepted. If you choose to delete cookies, any settings and preferences controlled by those cookies, including advertising preferences, will be deleted and may need to be recreated. We process and keep all data for our own use and, if you wish to opt-out from tracking by TC Global you can do so at [email protected]

  • Information Collected Automatically : In addition to any Personal Information or other information that you choose to submit to us, we may use a variety of technologies that automatically (or passively) collect certain information whenever you access the Site (" Usage Information "). This Usage Information may include the browser that you are using, the URL that referred you to our Site, mobile device model (manufacturer), OS type (IOS/android), OS version, network carrier, IP address, mobile screen size, time zone of the user, browser details, among other information. Usage Information may be non-identifying or may be associated with you. Whenever we associate Usage Information with your Personal Information, we will treat it as Personal Information and the conditions relating to Personal Information under this Privacy Policy will be followed. Fully Funded PhD Programs for International Students -03 (1)

Canada has emerged as a popular study destination for Indian students who want to pursue higher studies abroad. It is known for its quality education and employability, which is no wonder why more than 1 lakh Indian students choose to go to Canada for higher education every year. A PhD Degree in Canada is more affordable in comparison to that in popular study destinations like the UK or the US . More than 90 universities in Canada offer PhD Programs to international students, and it takes around 3-6 years to complete. It becomes a lot easier for Indian students to manage their expenses if they receive any kind of scholarship . But most of the scholarships are partially funded, so students tend to look for fully-funded programs. If you are also looking for a fully-funded PhD Program in Canada, then you are at the right place. Read the blog to know about the fully-funded PhD Programs offered in Canada.
