8 movies to watch while you’re writing your dissertation.

As a doctoral candidate or thesis writer , we have all been given advice on how to write our manuscripts, on how to research, on how to relax. We’re often given dissertation editing advice from advisors, readers, friends, family. We regularly scour the Internet looking at link upon link, possibly searching for a dissertation editor or reading prescribed advice from all types of experts in all kinds of fields. And as we weed through the expert advice, we continue to write and research and research and write, trying to find our groove to keep the flow of words moving from our brains to our fingertips.

Yet very rarely do the dissertation editors and experts give advice on mental thought processes through the utilization of entertainment. Oh sure, some experts will tell aspiring writers to watch such movies as Barton Fink, Misery, The Shining, Dead Poets Society, Stand By Me, or Henry Fool before sitting down to a blank page on their computer screen. However, we’ve found it’s often the case that inspiration comes not from movies about writers, but movies that offer ideas of inspiration from the norms found within the world. Such films may be considered provisional to getting the creative juices flowing but, in all honesty, certain movies can prove helpful for you when trying to get through the process of dissertation writing .

movies like thesis

So, no list of which movies are the best to watch before you write. That kind of list is nefarious, honestly, because it can create insecurities in one’s own writing style and can even create blank space or writer’s block since you will be thinking about how to write as well as Stephen King—which doesn’t even work for a dissertation!

Instead, today we’ll discuss some of the best movies to watch while writing your dissertation in terms of encouraging the creativity of one’s own thought processes and writing style.

Here’s our list:

  • Midnight in Paris (2011)
  • Adaptation (2002)
  • Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010)
  • Inside Out (2015)
  • Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
  • The Princess Bride (1987)
  • The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007)
  • Monsters vs. Aliens (2009)

Sitting down with your laptop and turning on the television, your desktop or laptop computer, or your tablet, flipping over to Netflix or Hulu or whatever movie channel you watch, and intertwining your writing thinking with the antics or drama of these films can push your creative fluids to flow freely.

You might be thinking, what kind of advice is this?! Who would recommend watching movies while writing my dissertation? Well, hang on, and we’ll run down the reasons alongside these feature films that we believe are sure to enhance your thinking, formulating, and writing of your dissertation or thesis.

Midnight in the Paris

movies like thesis

The fact that this movie stars Owen Wilson should not put you off, if you think watching a movie should be serious and related to academic writing.

Wilson is ingenious in his depiction of Gil and gives probably the best advice a writer having squashed thoughts or a block,

“Pretend you are sitting with a famed author and discussing your dissertation.”

For example, you might pretend you’re talking to Alice Goffman, who wrote an ethnographic study on the lived experiences of crack dealers while she was living with one. In your comfy chair, you might pretend that you and Goffman are discussing the legitimacies of her field study while you dish on all the crazy parties she went to and about the time she watched a layperson surgically remove a bullet from another crack dealer on her kitchen table.

This gets the juices flowing for the writers of this blog post—but we digress.

The point is that talking to your “pretend” friend-slash-author may provide you with inspiration. Crazily, Midnight in Paris provides a sound array of inspiration for many writers, and it really does convey quite a bit of good sound advice for when you have problems moving your writing along, and after all, we are all looking for that dissertation assistance .

This movie probably does not come to any surprise that it is on a list of suggested movies to watch while writing your dissertation. Everyone says Adaptation provides an embodiment of the enigmatic American literary icon, but what we believe has merit in this film is the fact that it portrays a writer who fights his personal demons, who faces ethical struggles, and had to adapt and change his original ideas to something someone else thought would be better. Many of us have dealt with this very type of change at the beginning of our dissertation.

It is certainly not unusual for a doctoral candidate to visit with the person they selected as their chair and walk out of an initial meeting feeling bamboozled and overwhelmed with all the necessary changes recommended. Often the earliest drafts require editing services to help get the required approval of a proposal but then are advised substantial changes. Charlie/Donald Kaufman offers audiences insight to slogging through any manuscript and gives viewers inspiration that shows the insanity of a writing process.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

movies like thesis

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is one of those silly teen angst films that most adults find superfluous. After all, with a generation of teens and young adults taking movie date night seriously, Hollywood has focused many films on capturing the attention of this population. However, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a movie that has an emphasis on something that all doctoral candidates should remember while writing their dissertation…there is more than one way to tell a story. So, while you are sitting there depressed because your committee ripped apart your discussion of the results chapter, remember that there is often more than one way to explain things. And while you certainly must adhere to their advice (such as it is) on changing your entire chapter 5, don’t get down on yourself. Get some popcorn, your laptop, and watch Scott Pilgrim vs. The World . It may help pick you up out of a slump, it may give you some inspiration, or it simply may be a way to remind you, that indeed, there are many ways to tell a story (or explain your results).

Okay, so who really admits to watching a kid’s movie? Or who would really believe an animated film holds more than a simple “golden rule” type message?

Yet the Pixar animated film Inside Out explores the inner self, discussing the psyche and the in-depth nature of emotional countenance.

When you’re in a creative slump, it’s reasonable to wish that you could be a kid again, and get back that big imagination you once had. Inside Out will definitely help nudge you in that direction, and it might make you shed a few creative tears too (Marsh & Zakrzewski, 2015).

Okay, so maybe you don’t have problems with your emotional well-being, but we all know that writing a dissertation is an emotional rollercoaster. It’s loving what you have written to want to delete the entire file. From working diligently for days, nights, and weekends, thinking you have created a masterpiece, to reading the crappy comments from your chair. Writing your dissertation can literally give you a lot of emotional meltdowns through the entire process!

Watching Inside Out can offer you a type of therapy that can help you embrace those strong emotions you may feel towards your dissertation and writing skills. This film makes you realize being happy comes hand in hand with sadness or what is termed as emodiversity. This term is the necessary emotional array that combines both the positive and negative aspects of your emotions to provide a balance of your mental health. And we all know that mental health is a tentative thing while writing your dissertation!

Sit back and work on your dissertation enjoying the antics of Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust as they explore their human’s (a young pre-teen named Riley) emotions as she is forced to deal with absolute craziness and adversity in her young life…like you dealing with the ups and downs of dissertation creation.

If you need dissertation help, one film to watch while writing your dissertation is Moonrise Kingdom. Everyone is aware that dissertation writing often makes you wish for a dissertation help service . There is no doubt that this gargantuan task in writing and working on a research study can be a little crazy-making!

movies like thesis

The film is an exploration of imagination and learning for 12-year olds Suzy and Sam. The film is set in 1965 and Suzy, and Sam runs away and fights to maintain their friendship which does evolve into romantic feelings. Beyond this, what we witness through the film is a desire to follow the dreams we first believe it, to have the tenacity to make such dreams come true. This is true with your dissertation. You had a dream of what you wanted your topic to be, and you developed through this dream how to arrive at this moment when you sat down and started to write.

Moonrise Kingdom reminds us that even though we are adults we still have “the childhood capacity to dream” and have the ability deep within ourselves to create the words to express our story. Perhaps statistical analysis of the data collected for your dissertation does not sound like a creative endeavor. However, watching Moonrise Kingdom can help to open up the imagination within you, to initiate the flow of words that you need for your chapters or even just prompt new ideas that help round out your dissertation.

The Princess Bride

movies like thesis

“My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die.”

“As you wish …”

“Inconceivable. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means”

“Who says life is fair, where is that written?”

“You seem a decent fellow, I hate to kill you. You seem a decent fellow, I hate to die.”

“No more rhymes now, I mean it! Anybody want a peanut?”

“When I was your age, television was called books”

These lines from the film The Princess Bride are familiar all over the world. The Princess Bride is one of the perfect fantasy films, but what many do not realize, is that The Princess Bride is a great movie to watch while you are working on your dissertation. Whether you are writing on quantitative analysis or qualitative research , The Princess Bride will remind you that you can put a twist on an old formula. Sometimes you don’t have to create something totally new for it to be original.

The thing about The Princess Bride that offers help with dissertation writing is the story is one of fairytale norm but has a different way that allows the characters to reach their happily ever after. The same can be noticed when you are writing your dissertation. You may need the help of a statistical consultant to help sort through the data found from your qualitative research and analysis. In the end, however, when you reach out to a statistician for help, you can consider this just taking a trip through the Fire Swamp and need to avoid the rodents of unusual size (ROUS) as Wesley and Buttercup once did. Watching The Princess Bride can give you a sense of clarity on this journey and help you understand that in the end, the road you travel to reach your conclusion (that happily ever after for graduate school) does not matter, only that you reach it

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Think about how our imagination is put to work when we write a dissertation or thesis. We don’t often consider dissertation and thesis writing as something we use our imagination, but we really need to step back and consider how our imagination works. We have an idea; our imagination formulates this idea and begins to build and create the intrinsic path from the idea to an outcome we hope for or even expect. Our imaginations walk us down this path, even when you are screaming help me write a thesis.

movies like thesis

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is an ingenious film that prompts an awe-inspiring tale of real-life Jean-Dominic Bauby. Bauby was an editor of French Elle magazine who through a tragic accident was paralyzed throughout his entire body. The only movement he can do is through his eyes. Bauby’s therapist, Celine, tirelessly works with Bauby to create a language using the movements of his eyes. The creativity of Bauby’s developed language through moving and blinking his eyes alone is inspirational.

The point of this movie for you may be just to feel good about how this man overcomes such tragedy in his life, but look deeper. Bauby facing severe adversity and rising above it, waking his mind, waking his body was beyond what most would expect. Even though writing your dissertation is not a tragedy (although it can feel that way), waking up your mind comes from seeing your idea clearly and recognizing that you can accomplish this daunting task.

Monsters vs. Aliens

movies like thesis

You read the title right.

Monsters vs. Aliens is the story of Susan Murphy who is about to marry egomaniac Derek Dietl but is hit by a meteorite before the ceremony. The meteorite contains an alien substance called quantonium which makes Susan grow to an enormous, gigantic size whitening her hair. Captured by the army, Susan, renamed Ginormica, meets other monsters hidden by the government. Housed with Susan/Ginormica is B.O.B. (benzoate ostlyezene bicarbonate), a mutated being who was created as a food flavoring blue goo with no brain, Dr. Cockroach Ph.D. who is a half cockroach, half human and is quite mad, Insectosaurus, who is a 350 ft tall mutated bug of unknown origin, and Link (aka the Missing Link) who was found frozen and deemed a fish-ape hybrid over 20,000 years old.

When an alien invader arrives, the government relies on the monsters to save the day.

Sounds like a typical feel-good movie, right?

Nope. What we found from watching Monsters vs. Aliens was a real sense of inspiration, which came from understanding that the enormity of any situation, for example like writing a thesis or dissertation, could be tempered by the perspective of the situation and thereby could entice an open flow of verbiage from the brain to paper.

Still confused?

When we watched Monsters vs. Aliens , we recognized how super huge Susan became and how she overcame it based her finally realizing what she wanted. She was happy being a big monster that could help save the world.

If you apply this thinking to being stuck and needing thesis help , it might help you to ignore the enormity of the project and work on one section at a time. Each small section builds far more easily onto the next once you stop focusing on the monumental task of writing an entire manuscript.

The Wicked Teaser Is Finally Here—and People Have a Lot of Opinions

E ver since the Wicked movie musical was announced, fervent fans of the long-running stage musical have been excitedly awaiting a glimpse of the Jon M. Chu-directed adaptation. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are set to star as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, joined by a star-studded cast that includes Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Bowen Yang, and Ethan Slater. The minute-long teaser was released shortly after Super Bowl LVIII started and garnered an enthusiastic reaction from social media users.

There wasn’t much dialogue in the trailer, but there was one musical moment in particular that prompted a conversation on social media. At the end of the teaser trailer, we can hear Erivo’s ending riff of one of the show’s most well-known numbers, “Defying Gravity.” Her rendition introduces some slight changes to the version popularized by Idina Menzel, and the new take divided fans of the musical. “Cynthia's Defying Gravity climax had me shouting in this apartment,” one person wrote on X.

“This looks incredible, although I’m not sure how I feel about Cynthia’s run at the end of Defying Gravity,” another person wrote.

The excitement for the trailer was palpable on social media as people posted their reactions.

Shortly after the teaser trailer was released, Vanity Fair released the first interview with Erivo and Grande, where they talked about the making of the movie. Producer Marc Platt spoke to the decision to cut the movie into two parts. “We didn’t want to end up making one four-hour movie and then cutting out songs,” he said. “We want to satisfy the fans of the musical.” Some fans opined that the musical's better songs are in its first half.

it's gonna be great when Wicked part 2 comes out, and we all get to enjoy such musical song hits as "morality is complicated" and "everyone is older and sadder now" — Patrick Lenton (@PatrickLenton) February 12, 2024

Wicked is beloved among the theater community and one of the most successful musicals ever to hit the Great White Way, so any changes are sure to inspire conversation. The original show made its debut on Broadway in 2003, and last year, the show celebrated its 20th anniversary. Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel originated the roles of Glinda and Elphaba. The story, adapted from Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West , essentially serves as a prequel to the Wicked Witch of the West’s story in The Wizard of Oz and follows the two witches who become friends and later rivals.

Berlin: why streamers’ belt tightening casts a shadow over indies.

With the biggest platforms pulling back on how much independent fare they buy, insiders are questioning how indie movies can make the numbers work: "There’s just not enough revenue from at-home markets to cover production costs"

(L-R) Liam Hemsworth as Kinney and Luke Hemsworth as Abel in LAND OF BAD

The European Film Market is off to a strong start, buoyed by post-strike optimism and a truly impressive lineup of projects on offer in Berlin this year, including available indie movies with the A-list draws of stars such as Margot Robbie, Dave Bautista, Scarlett Johansson, and Will Smith. Coming off a solid Sundance and improving box office figures, both in the U.S. and Europe, hope appears to be slowly returning to an indie film industry that seemed near the brink just six months ago.

Rooney mara on how david fincher helped influence future role choices, christopher nolan says he wants to make a horror movie.

“We’ve all become more and more beholden to the streamers for ancillary revenue, and those license fees have been dramatically reduced,” says one veteran seller. “If you’re building a finance model for an independent film, these days, your return on that pay-one window is probably going to be a third of what you would have expected just a few years ago. There’s just not enough revenue from at-home markets to cover production costs for most films.”

Headline-making deals, like Netflix’s $17 million acquisition of Greg Jardin’s horror thriller It’s What’s Inside , or Amazon’s $15 million buy of Megan Park’s comedy My Old Ass , both out of Sundance this year, are not, sellers say, making up for the broader loss of pay-one revenue as streamers overall buy fewer indie movies.

It’s no surprise that most active independent buyers, the likes of A24 and Bleecker Street, have pay-one output deals in place (with Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global’s Showtime Networks, respectively) that guarantee ancillary monies for their entire slate.

Caruth also sees a divide between streamer demand for mainstream genre films —she points to The Avenue’s action thriller Land of Bad starring Liam and Luke Hemsworth alongside Russell Crowe, as “exactly the type of content streamers are looking for” —with the more “unique edgy indie fare” —think Celine Song’s Past Lives , Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall or Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days — that are pulling in audiences in theaters “but might not necessarily work as well for the platforms.”

“Those kinds of generic action movies are great for Netflix and Amazon but they no longer have currency as a theatrical movie,” notes one European-based packager and seller, pointing to Liam Neeson’s Retribution , which earned just $7 million domestically for Roadside Attractions, or Millennium Media’s Expend4bles , which earned less than $17 million at the domestic box office for Lionsgate, the worst performance, by far, of the Expendables franchise.

But Joe Lewis, CEO of Amplify Pictures, sees new opportunities in the streaming market as platforms shift away from their walled-garden approach of global all-rights deals and begin to “enter into an age of non-exclusively with is super-exciting…You can put your stuff out on multiple VOD platforms now and you see that the numbers aren’t cannibalizing each other, in fact, they can be additive.”

Caruth agrees, noting that the recent strategic shift by the streamers, “where they are beginning to license and window content” and be more flexible with rights deals makes her “cautiously optimistic again.”

But, given the increasingly vital importance of streaming revenue to indie films, and the increasing dominance of a handful of vertically-integrated producer/distributor platforms, a long-term solution for the pay-one window problem is still out of sight.

“I’m going to say something which will probably ensure that I never get hired by one of these streamers, but without some form of regulation, as they have in Europe to require platforms to buy a certain amount from the independents, it’s going to be very hard for independent producers and independent films to survive,” says Caruth. “But for the streamers, regulation is a four-letter word.”

Illinois mayor shuts down local businesses that don’t contribute to her campaign, dresses like a movie gangster: citizens.

Dolton, Illinois — Mayor Tiffany Henyard attends meetings dressed as a movie gangster and her residents say she plays the part – retaliating against them unless they do her bidding, The Post can reveal.

Henyard channeled drug kingpin Nino Brown from the 1991 gangster movie “New Jack City” at a 2023 gathering, an ensemble meant to intimidate, her critics claimed this week.

“People look at politics like a joke, it’s like a mockery right now because of all this stuff,” Village of Dolton Trustee Kiana Belcher told The Post. “She comes to board meetings dressed like Nino Brown.”

During one meeting dressed in the ensemble, Henyard, 40, signaled for a DJ to blare Rihanna’s “Bitch Better Have My Money” as she sashayed around the room to punctuate a point she was making, sources said.

Henyard committed to the character, carrying a small stuffed dog to evoke a scene from the 1991 crime classic where Nino menaces and batters an underling, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The former burger joint owner turned local politician is under fire for allegedly plundering Dolton’s coffers for personal extravagances, and using law enforcement allies to oppress opponents.

Lawrence Gardner, 57, told The Post Friday Henyard shut down his trucking business because he refused to renew a contribution $3,500 to her political war chest.

Gardner claimed he made an initial donation to Henyard, but her minions kept coming back for more.

Tiffany Henyard

“I made the payment,” he said. “Then every year she started coming and required the same thing, and we had a problem about that.”

When he refused, Gardner said city officials fabricated claims he was illegally selling alcohol and yanked his business license.

“What is she Nino Brown?” he said. “Anything she wants done, she gets them to harass you. She likes nobody. If you are not doing what she say, if you are not doing how she’s saying to do it, you are a problem. She don’t like them.”

Tiffany Henyard

Gardner said Henyard and Village of Dolton Police Chief Lewis Lacey have blocked dozens of local businesses from operating because they failed to make the required payments.

The Post heard similar stories from numerous locals who claimed they had recieved harassment from police acting on Henyard’s orders.

Belcher also said former Dolton Chief of Police Robert Collins admitted to her the mayor had asked him to target people .

Henyard’s office did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment Friday.

Trustee Belcher also said Henyard is averse to working mornings.

“She doesn’t wake up until after 10:00. I knew her before, she’s not a morning person. She’s a late night person,” she said.

Former Dolton Mayor Riley Rogers, who lost to Henyard in 2021, questioned her sprawling security detail and allegedly profligate spending.

“Some people take it as being glamorous by having a bunch of police officers around you and being escorted and being driven around,” he said. “I never had a security detail as mayor.”

Like other locals, Rogers said Henyard’s outflow of cash has come as a shock.

Tiffany Henyard

“I tried to stay away from the money,” he said. “It’s not your money so you can’t use it like it’s your piggy bank.”

Henyard, who recently met President Biden during a White House visit, has squelched inquiries into the town’s finances, critics argue.

The books are so bad, some said, that Dolton police cars might have to be repossessed .

Vocal community member Sherry Britton, 55, said she voted for Henyard — and now wishes she didn’t.

“It was a vote that I regret,” she said. “Please put that in there! It was a vote that I regret deeply. When she got into office, she just shut everyone out and she went into the opposite direction. She became this tyrant and dictator.”

Britton speculated that that Henyard is having mental issues, and compared her to rapper Kanye West.

Tiffany Henyard

“It seems like her aspirations and goals are for her to be a reality star,” she said. “She didn’t [previously] wear all that make up. She just now thinks she’s this reality star. I don’t know this for sure but they say she is filming a reality show, because the cameras are always with her.”

Former trustee Valeria Stubbs, 56, has known Henyard for 15 years.

Like others, she questioned her expenditures — including more than $1 million on security and another $2 million for an ice rink that only opens when she’s hosting an event.

“I’ve never seen anything like this in my life,” she said. “And I have been involved in the political arena ever since I was 18.”

A small village of about 20,000 people just south of Chicago, Dolton is submerged under $5 million in debt, according to reports.

Cillian Murphy Calls Press Tours a ‘Broken Model’ Because ‘Everybody Is So Bored,’ Says ‘Red Eye’ Is a Fine B-Movie but ‘I Don’t Think It’s a Good Movie’

Cillian Murphy ‘s “Oppenheimer” press tour is now in its final stages as the actor does his final weeks of campaigning in the lead up to the Oscars, where he’s nominated for best actor thanks to his leading turn in Christopher Nolan’s atom bomb epic. If it were up to Murphy, there might not have been a press tour to begin with. In a new GQ cover story, the actor admits that press tours (complete with red-carpet interviews and junkets) are not a great model and he’d much prefer to let the movies do the heavy promotional lifting.

Even with its actors prevented from doing press, Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” still turned into a box office powerhouse along with its release date partner “Barbie.” Nolan’s film has earned more than $955 million at the worldwide box office, making it the highest-grossing biographical drama in film history.

“Same was the case with ‘Peaky Blinders,'” Murphy pointed out. “The first three seasons there was no advertising, a tiny show on BBC Two; it just caught fire because people talked to each other about it.”

“It’s like Joanne Woodward said,” he added. “‘Acting is like sex—do it, don’t talk about it’ … People always used to say to me, ‘He has reservations’ or ‘He’s a difficult interviewee.’ Not really! I love talking about work, about art. What I struggle with, and find unnecessary, and unhelpful about what I want to do, is: ‘Tell me about yourself…’”

Going through both his personal and professional life, Murphy told GQ that “many of my films I haven’t seen. I know that Johnny Depp would always say that, but it’s actually true. Generally the ones I haven’t seen are the ones I hear are not good.”

One movie he did see in his career that he didn’t particularly love was “Red Eye,” Wes Craven’s 2005 psychological thriller about a hotel manager (Rachel McAdams) who ends up sitting next to a terrorist on a plane and becomes entangled in his assassination plot.

Murphy added, “I love Rachel McAdams and we had fun making it. But I don’t think it’s a good movie. It’s a good  B  movie.”

“They say the nicest people sometimes make the best villains,” Rachel McAdams told GQ about her co-star .  “We’d listen to music and gab away while doing the crossword puzzle, which he brought every day and would graciously let me chime in on.… I think the number one question I got about Cillian way back then was whether or not he wore contact lenses.”

Murphy previously knocked “Red Eye” during a 2021 interview with Uproxx in which he said: “When I was a younger actor, I was really, really hard on everything that I was in. I hated watching myself. I hated looking at myself on screen. I remember when I saw it was like ‘Oh, that’s kind of a schlocky B movie.’ Rachel McAdams is excellent in it. But I didn’t think I gave a very nuanced performance in it. But, listen, if people love the movie then that’s great. I’m pleased with that. I’m less hard on myself now when I look at stuff. I’m less hypercritical of my work. But that’s probably a hangover from that to be honest.”
