Finite-time analysis of frequentist strategies for multi-armed bandits.

This thesis studies the following topics in the area of Reinforcement Learning: classic Multi-armed bandits in stationary distribution with the goal of cumulative regret mini- mization using variance estimates and Thresholding bandits in pure exploration fixed- budget setting with the goal of instantaneous regret minimization also using variance estimates. The common underlying theme is the study of bandit theory and its applica- tion in various types of environments. In the first part of the thesis, we study the classic multi-armed bandit problem with a stationary distribution, one of the first settings stud- ied by the bandit community and which successively gave rise to several new directions in bandit theory. We propose a novel algorithm in this setting and compare both theoret- ically and empirically its performance against the available algorithms. Our proposed algorithm termed as Efficient-UCB-Variance (EUCBV) is the first arm-elimination al- gorithm which uses variance estimation to eliminate arms as well as achieve an order optimal regret bound. Empirically, we show that EUCBV outperforms most of the state-of-the-art algorithms in the considered environments. In the next part, we study a specific type of stochastic multi-armed bandit setup called the thresholding bandit problem and discuss its usage, available state-of-the-art algorithms on this setting and our solution to this problem. We propose the Augmented-UCB (AugUCB) algorithm which again uses variance and mean estimation along with arm elimination technique to conduct exploration. We give theoretical guarantees on the expected loss of our algo- rithm and also analyze its performance against state-of-the-art algorithms in numerical simulations in multiple synthetic environments.

This JDP is independent of the regular PhD program at the Department of Applied Mechanics, IIT Madras. The JDP requires a minimum of one semester residential clinical practice at CMC Vellore and may involve additional residential stay or travel to the two partnering clinical institutions during the term of the PhD program.It may be helpful to note that the selected candidates who join the program will work on a thesis with two guides – one from any Department at IIT Madras, and the other, a suitable collaborator, by mutual agreement between the guides, from either SCTIMST or CMC. Kumara is a 1977 graduate of IIT Madras (MT) was also awarded as an Outstanding Industrial Engineer by the School of Industrial Engineering in 2022. Kumara is the Allen E. Pearce and Allen M. Pearce Professor of Industrial Engineering at Penn State.  He is the founder of the Intelligent Design and Diagnostics Research Laboratory at PSU, now called the Laboratory for Intelligent Systems and Analytics (LISA). His work on AI has been covered in ISE Magazine, and he has earned research awards from both IISE and ASME. SME named Kumara one of the 20 Most Influential Academics in Smart Manufacturing in 2021.

Chandrasekar is a 1981 graduate of IIT Madras (BT), and is a Professor of Industrial Engineering with a courtesy appointment in Materials Engineering. Chandrasekar also currently runs the Center for Materials Processing and Tribology (CMPT) lab at Purdue. In 2011, he was elected as a fellow to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He is the recipient of ASME’s 2019 Milton C. Shaw Manufacturing Research Medal, which recognized his outstanding contributions to the field of materials manufacturing.
