A divine decision is in the lips of the king; His mouth should not err in judgment.

You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not fear man, for the judgment is God’s. The case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.’

He who gives an answer before he hears, It is folly and shame to him.

A just balance and scales belong to the Lord ; All the weights of the bag are His concern.

The lot is cast into the lap, But its every decision is from the Lord .

This is a plain indication of God’s righteous judgment so that you will be considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which indeed you are suffering.

The plans of the heart belong to man, But the answer of the tongue is from the Lord .

Without consultation, plans are frustrated, But with many counselors they succeed.

Many plans are in a man’s heart, But the counsel of the Lord will stand.

Therefore it is my judgment that we do not trouble those who are turning to God from among the Gentiles,

It is a trap for a man to say rashly, “It is holy!” And after the vows to make inquiry.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.

So give Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people to discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”

You shall put in the breastpiece of judgment the Urim and the Thummim, and they shall be over Aaron’s heart when he goes in before the Lord ; and Aaron shall carry the judgment of the sons of Israel over his heart before the Lord continually.

But He said to him, “Man, who appointed Me a judge or arbitrator over you?”

being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

The mind of man plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps.

Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

The king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of the Lord ; He turns it wherever He wishes.

Then David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Let us now fall into the hand of the Lord for His mercies are great, but do not let me fall into the hand of man.”

A spirit of justice for him who sits in judgment, A strength to those who repel the onslaught at the gate.

And these also reel with wine and stagger from strong drink: The priest and the prophet reel with strong drink, They are confused by wine, they stagger from strong drink; They reel while having visions, They totter when rendering judgment.

Do not be hasty in word or impulsive in thought to bring up a matter in the presence of God. For God is in heaven and you are on the earth; therefore let your words be few.

The foolishness of man ruins his way, And his heart rages against the Lord .

decision making verse in bible

Making a decision can feel overwhelming.

You have a gazillion options to choose between for everything.

You’ll open a new browser tab in Google to answer a question before making a decision.

You’ll bounce back and forth at work by switching between tasks hundreds of times.

To add insult to injury, according to one study, adults will make 35,000 decisions every day .

I feel anxious just writing about these statistics.

Time to heed Jim Gaffigan’s advice:

You may not feel like it’s a big deal to make thousands of choices every day. But for some of you reading this post, making a decision—both big and small—is grueling.

You second guess yourself all of the time, and you’re just never sure about the choices you make.

Regardless of where you find yourself about the choices  you make, as a follower of Christ, I know you’re concerned about whether or not you make choices that please God.

In short, you want to walk in God’s will for your life.

To help you know God’s will, make biblical decisions, and overcome decision anxiety, we poured over 76 Bible passages  about decisions, choices, and wisdom.

After reflecting on these scriptures about decision making, we put together a guide to help you better understand God’s will and how to make biblical choices.

In this post, we’re going to cover the following:

What is God’s will?

What is god’s will for your life.

Talking about the will of God is easier said than done.

There tends to be a bit of confusion (understatement?) surrounding this topic of conversation.

The challenge in talking about God’s will really boils down to this:

Mixing up the way we talk about God’s will with the way the Bible talks about God’s will.

Let me explain.

The Bible generally talks about God’s will in two different ways, which are made clear in Deuteronomy 29:29:

“The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law."

In this verse, we see that the Bible talks about God’s will in these two ways:

God’s sovereign will

God’s revealed will.

Let’s take a moment to explore these two sides of the same coin.

God’s sovereign will is also known as his “secret” will or his “hidden” will. In other words, we don’t see this part of God’s will until after it occurs.

Is it God’s will for it to rain tomorrow?

Will your favorite football, baseball, or basketball team win the championship?

Will the business proposal you pitched get picked up?

You may be able to forecast the answer to these questions and have a pretty good idea of the outcome, but you won’t know God’s will until after the fact.

What is more, there’s entirely nothing that falls outside of God’s sovereign will. Whatever God has willed (decreed) to occur will happen.

We see God’s sovereign (secret) will in many verses in the Bible:

Psalm 139:16:

Your eyes saw my unformed substance;

in your book were written, every one of them,

the days that were formed for me,

when as yet there was none of them.

Isaiah 46:9-10:

"Remember the former things of old;

   for I am God, and there is no other;

I am God, and there is none like me,

declaring the end from the beginning

and from ancient times things not yet done,

   saying, ‘My counsel shall stand,

and I will accomplish all my purpose.’"

Matthew 10:29:

"Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.”

"For truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.”

Ephesians 1:11:

"In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will."

God’s revealed will refers to how God desires for us to live.

This side of God’s will is made plain as day in the Bible.

Here are a few examples to consider:

  • It’s God’s will for you to repent and believe in Jesus (Acts 3:19)
  • It’s God’s will for you to tell the truth (Lev. 19:11)
  • It’s God’s will for you to glorify him (1 Cor. 10:31)
  • It’s God’s will for you to be sober (Eph. 5:18)
  • It’s God’s will for you to work hard (Rom. 12:11-17)

This list can go on. But you get the point.

On the one hand, when we’re talking about God’s will for your life, you’re not going to find the answer to specific questions you have, such as:

  • Who should you marry?
  • Where should you work?
  • What college should you attend?

On the other hand, what you will find in the Bible are morals and principles that will guide you in the decisions you make, which will explore in detail below.

In the meantime, here’s one key passage from the Bible that talks about God’s revealed will:

2 Timothy 3:15-16:

“And how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness."

What doe the Bible say about making decisions?

As I mentioned above, you’re going to make around 35,000 decisions today.

For the vast majority of the decisions you make, you’ll just need to make a choice.

Assuming you’re in communion with God through prayer, reading the Bible, and Christian community, you won’t need to spend an inordinate amount of time contemplating every little decision you make.

For instance, here are some fundamental decisions God expects you to make with the brain and common sense he gave you:

  • What clothes should I wear today? (Just wear something)
  • Should I fudge the numbers on my tax returns? (Tell the truth)
  • Do I need to take my wife out to dinner? (Love your wife)
  • What should I have for breakfast, lunch, or dinner? (Food, but don’t overeat)

But here’s the deal: When you need to make a non-moral decision that’s not spelled out in the Bible (e.g., marriage, work, college), it’s a good idea to follow the Bible verses about decisions.

Following God’s guidance in decision making will help you to avoid potential pitfalls and honor the LORD in the decision you make.

In studying Bible verses about decisions, there’s an observable 7-step biblical decision-making guide that comes to the surface:

  • Clarify the decision
  • Get wisdom from the Bible
  • Seek godly counsel
  • Consider alternative choices
  • Make a choice
  • Trust the Lord

#1. Clarify the decision

Are you not sure about whether or not you should marry someone?

Do you have a new job opportunity you’re considering?

Are you thinking through what church you should join?

The first step you need to take when making a decision is to actually clarify the decision you need to make. This is the compass that will guide you through the rest of this decision-making process.

If you’re confused or not sure what you’re trying to decide, you’ll be walking in a fog throughout the rest of this process. Before moving forward, make sure you have a clear idea in mind about the decision you need to make.

Proverbs 18:13:

"If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.”

Proverbs 18:17:

"The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him."

#2. Get wisdom from God

The next step you need to take is to get wisdom from God.

Thankfully, as I pointed about above, God doesn’t hide his will for your life close to his chest like a skillful poker player. He lets you know how he desires for you to live your life for him.

To get wisdom from God, you have to fear the LORD first.

Check out this opening salvo from the Book of Proverbs:

“The fear to the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” —Proverbs 1:7

In this context, to fear the LORD is to revere the LORD.

Through faith in Christ, you’ll be led to have a profound awe, respect, and humility in your heart for the LORD. Fearing the LORD is the starting position you’ll need to take if you desire to live your life for him.

We see this reality clearly illustrated in Deuteronomy 10:20-21:

“You shall fear the LORD your God. You shall serve him and hold fast to him, and by his name you shall swear. He is your praise. He is your God, who has done for you these great and terrifying things that your eyes have seen.”

Getting wisdom from God for the decision you need to make is not an idle pursuit.

It does require studying the Bible to understand what God has to say about your decision. But obtaining this information alone is not enough.

We’ll talk more about this in the next step (seek godly counsel). But I want to highlight it now so that way you’re not inclined to stop reading at this point and move on.

Now, let’s take a look at the difference between knowledge and wisdom. It’s easy to get the two of these confused, and it’s essential to make sure you know the difference between them.

What is the difference between knowledge and wisdom?

Have you memorized the Bible verses about wisdom and guidance?

Do you know a handful of Bible verses about dating, marriage, and sex?

Can you quote several passages about work?

You need to know what the Bible has to say about the decision you want to make to be informed. But knowing what the Bible has to say about any given topic is only one part of getting wisdom from God.

When we talk about biblical decision making, knowledge is knowing what the Bible has to say about the decision you need to make. Knowledge is having the right information.

If you have wrong or misinformation about what the Bible says about any given topic, you’ll make a wrong, misinformed, or sinful decision.

So, if knowledge is having information, then wisdom is being able to apply that information to your situation. This is the difference between knowledge and wisdom you need to know.

To help you think through getting wisdom from God, here are multiple Bible verses about wisdom and guidance for you to review.

Joshua 1:8:

"This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success."

1 Chronicles 10:13:

"So Saul died for his breach of faith. He broke faith with the LORD in that he did not keep the command of the LORD, and also consulted a medium, seeking guidance."

Psalm 19:7-9:

"The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether.”

Psalm 119:105:

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

Proverbs 2:1-5:

"My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.”

Habakkuk 2:19:

"Woe to him who says to a wooden thing, Awake; to a silent stone, Arise! Can this teach? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in it."

Romans 12:1-2:

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Romans 15:4:

"For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope."

Hebrews 4:12:

"For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart."

2 Timothy 3:14-16:

"But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.”

2 Peter 1:19:

"And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts."

#3. Seek godly counsel

You are not called to live your life alone.

God has created you for community.

When you place your faith in Christ, you become a member of the body of Christ (1 Cor. 12).

As you study Bible verses about decisions, one clear theme you’ll observe time-and-time again is your need for godly counsel to make wise choices.

Again, you don’t need to ask someone their opinion on most of the decisions you make every day. But when you’re dealing with a choice that isn’t clearly addressed in the Bible, it’s essential to seek the advice of other Christians in your life.

So take the time to listen to what your family, friends, and church leaders have to say.

But here’s the kicker:

Make sure you’re not living in an echo chamber.

In other words, don’t only seek the counsel of someone in your life who you know will agree with the decision you want to make. Maintain a posture of humility by being open to hearing the opinions of other godly men and women in your life—even if you don’t agree with what they have to say.

Here are some Bible verses about guidance in decision making that will shed some additional light:

Proverbs 1:5:

"Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance.”

Proverbs 11:14:

"Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety."

Proverbs 12:15:

"The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice."

Proverbs 13:10:

"Where there is strife, there is pride, but wisdom is found in those who take advice."

Proverbs 13:20:

"Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm."

Proverbs 15:22:

"Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.”

Proverbs 15:31-33:

"The ear that listens to life-giving reproof will dwell among the wise. Whoever ignores instruction despises himself, but he who listens to reproof gains intelligence. The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor."

Proverbs 18:1-2, 24:

"Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire; he breaks out against all sound judgment. A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion... A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”

Proverbs 19:8:

"The one who gets wisdom loves life; the one who cherishes understanding will soon prosper."

Proverbs 19:20:

"Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future.”

Proverbs 27:6:

"Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy.”

Proverbs 28:26:

"Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered."

1 Corinthians 15:33:

"Do not be deceived: 'Bad company ruins good morals.'”

The stool of God’s wisdom is held up by three-legs: the Bible, godly counsel, and prayer.

As you study the scriptures on decision making and seek godly counsel, don’t forget to pray along the way.

In seeking God’s guidance in decision making, you need to ask for God’s help to apply what you’re reading in the Bible and what you hear from your community.

God wants you to make wise decisions, and he has given you an open invitation to ask for wisdom (James 1:5).

Trust the Lord.

Believe in him.

And ask him to give you the wisdom you need.

As you maintain a posture of prayer, it’s also a good idea to set aside dedicated time to pray about your decision. In your prayers, be open to the possibility that the LORD will redirect your desires to lead you in the direction he wants you to go.

Proverbs 2:6:

"For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding."

1 Chronicles 16:11:

"Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually!"

Jeremiah 33:3:

"Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.”

Matthew 6:9-10:

"Pray then like this:

   'Our Father in heaven,

   hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom come,

   your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven."

Luke 22:41-42:

"And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”

John 16:13:

"When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come."

1 Corinthians 3:18:

"Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become 'fools' so that you may become wise."

Philippians 4:6-7:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18:

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

1 John 5:14:

"And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.”

#5. Consider alternative choices

Here’s one key to making big decisions:

Be patient.

By the time you get to this step, it’s possible that days, weeks, or months have passed by. Don’t rush the process. Take time to understand the decision you need to make, study the Bible, seek counsel, and pray.

Before making your final choice about a job, school, or whatever you decision you need to make, make sure you consider all of the choices you have.

Check out these few scriptures on choices:

Proverbs 14:1:

"The wisest of women builds her house,

but folly with her own hands tears it down."

Proverbs 14:5:

"A faithful witness does not lie,

but a false witness breathes out lies."

Proverbs 27:12

"The prudent sees danger and hides himself,

but the simple go on and suffer for it.”

Luke 14:28:

"For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?"

#6. Make a choice

Now it’s time to make a decision.

This sounds simple enough. But many Christians struggle with passivity or timidity in making a choice.

At the end of the day, you have to make a decision.

Here’s a list of Bible verses about choices for you to consider:

Deuteronomy 30:9-10:

"The Lord your God will make you abundantly prosperous in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your womb and in the fruit of your cattle and in the fruit of your ground. For the Lord will again take delight in prospering you, as he took delight in your fathers, when you obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep his commandments and his statutes that are written in this Book of the Law, when you turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.”

Deuteronomy 30:19:

"I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live."

Joshua 24:15:

"And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14:

"The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil."

Matthew 7:13-14:

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”

1 Corinthians 10:13:

"No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it."

Galatians 6:7-8:

"Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.”

Colossians 3:17:

"And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

Hebrews 11:25:

"Choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin."

#7. Trust the Lord

After making your decision, you may feel like you can wash your hands and walk away.

But not so fast.

Regardless of the decision you made, you’re still called to trust in the LORD.

Do you want to glorify God in your work?

You’ll need to trust him to empower you to do the work you’re called to do.

Do you want to love your wife like Jesus loves the church?

You need God’s help to do that.

Do you want to live and love like Jesus today?

Well, you can’t do that on your own. You need to trust that God the Holy Spirit will empower you to live a life like Christ.

What’s the point of all this?

There will never be a time when you “arrive” as a Christian.

Every single day of your life you will need to trust God with everything.

And remember:

God is always guiding you.

Regardless if you’re actively pursuing God, read your Bible and prayed for one hour today, or committed a sin, God’s will for you and everyone else in the world isn’t altered. He's still at work in your life guiding your along the way.

Be sure to study these Bible verses about trusting God:

Proverbs 3:5-6:

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths."

Isaiah 58:11:

"And the LORD will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail."

Matthew 6:33:

"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."

John 8:12:

"Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'"

James 3:17:

"But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere."

Proverbs 19:21:

"Many are the plans in the mind of a man,

but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand."

Romans 8:28:

"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose."

Let’s face it:

You’re going to meet challenging times in your life.

God doesn’t promise you a life void of pain and suffering on this side of heaven. You’ll experience highs and lows. But God and his people will comfort you, support you, and transform you more into the likeness of Jesus Christ along the way.

To help you see trying times in your life from God’s perspective, there are many Bible verses about trusting God in difficult times that will shed some light on your situation:

Deuteronomy 31:6:

"Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”

Isaiah 26:3:

"You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.”

Jeremiah 32:27:

“Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me?”

Psalm 9:10:

"And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you."

Psalm 28:7:

"The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him."

Psalm 34:17-18:

"When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears

and delivers them out of all their troubles.

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted

and saves the crushed in spirit.”

Proverbs 37:5:

"Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act."

Psalm 55:22:

"Cast your burden on the LORD,

   and he will sustain you;

   he will never permit

   the righteous to be moved.”

2 Corinthians 1:3-4:

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”

2 Corinthians 4:16-18:

"So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”

2 Corinthians 12:9-10:

"But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

1 Peter 4:12-13:

"Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.”

Hebrews 12:1-3:

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted."

Are you prone to worry about everything in your life?

It’s easy to be tempted with anxiety about how things will or will not work out. This is the case for many Christians in the United States and around the world.

It can be easy to focus on the things going wrong in our life instead of trusting in God who we cannot see.

If you’re prone to feel anxiety, consider spending time meditating on these Bible verses about trusting God and not worry:

Isaiah 41:10:

"Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

Isaiah 43:1:

"But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: 'Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.’"

Psalm 23:4:

"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

   I will fear no evil,

   for you are with me;

   your rod and your staff,

   they comfort me.”

Psalm 56:3:

"When I am afraid,

I put my trust in you.”

Psalm 94:19:

"When the cares of my heart are many,

   your consolations cheer my soul.”

Proverbs 12:25:

"Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down,

but a good word makes him glad.”

Philippians 4:6:

John 14:27:.

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

2 Timothy 1:7:

"For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”

1 John 4:18:

"There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love."

FAQs about Decision Making and The Bible

How do you make good life decisions.

The Bible is the best guide we have. In matters where the Bible doesn't speak directly, follow the principles God's Word outlines. When in doubt, seek the counsel of godly people in your life.

What the Bible says about making wise decisions?

See above! There are lots of verses that tell us how important it is to make wise decisions, but the most important decision you will ever make is whether or not you will trust and serve the Lord Jesus Christ.,

Does God make our decisions?

Nope, God has given us free will, so we must choose to obey Him, to practice wisdom, and to love our neighbors. God does, however, help us through His Word and the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

How do I seek God's guidance in decision-making?

The best practice is to read Scripture, not just when you're faced with a decision but every day. In that way, you will accumulate godly wisdom for when you need it most.

How do you know God's will for your life?

God's will for your life is to follow Jesus. We are to do what He commands. These commands include what we find in the Bible, specifically those New Testament commands and Old Testament principles meant for followers of Jesus Christ. We also learn God's will by walking with Him in prayer daily.

What Does the Bible Say About the Choices We Make?

Our choices have real consequences, so we must be careful to practice wisdom. At the same time, God is powerful enoug to redeem us from the consequences of our poor decisions, so we are never without hope.

What are the characteristics of good decision-making?

Good decision-making honors the Lord, blesses others, and brings one's self into alignment with the heart of almighty God.

How do you pray for decision-making?

Simply ask. God will answer our prayers for wisdom and will direct our paths if we are open to His guidance. Pray something like, "Dear Father, I don't know what to do in this situation, but You do. Give me wisdom and help me to choose a path that honors You. Amen."

How does God help us make decisions?

God helps us through His Word, the example of godly people, and the prompting of His Spirit in our life. Trust Him, and He will give you the guidance you need. At the same time, our Good Shepherd leads His sheep to green pastures; He doesn't specify which blades of grass we should eat. Oftentimes, God gives us several good choices to choose from.

Over to you

While making decisions may feel overwhelming for you, I pray these Bible verses about decisions, choices, and wisdom bring you clarity and bring you peace in the decisions you make.

Before asking my parting question, let’s take a quick look at the 7-step biblical decision-making guide I shared above:

Can the Bible Help Me Make Decisions? 5 Verses That Offer Wisdom

God’s Word can give you direction for daily decisions and life-changing choices

ABS News Blog Life Challenges & Stress/Anxiety

decision making verse in bible

September 22, 2021

By Elisabeth Trefsgar

Have you ever stopped to consider how many decisions you make in a day?

For me, the day begins with a critical choice: do I hit the tempting “snooze” button on my alarm? Next, I decide how much time to spend on my morning devotions. Do I sit and refresh my heart with God’s Word, or do I rush through my reading and prayer time? (Too often, I choose the latter!) Then, it’s on to breakfast. What do I eat? Do I drink coffee or tea? What should I wear? Should I reply to that email before work, or wait until the end of the day? By the time I start work, I’ve made dozens of decisions. These choices may seem small, but some can impact the rest of my day. Others form helpful—or harmful—habits that I might continue for the rest of my life.

Beyond the decisions we make each day, we face all kinds of potentially life-changing choices: where to go to school, what kind of job to pursue, which church to attend, which person to date, what to do with our free time.

Many of us make decisions for other people. Parents face choices that affect their children’s lives and futures, and children often grow up and decide how to care for their parents as they age. Bosses make decisions that impact their employees. Politicians choose platforms and vote for laws that direct our nation. Pastors and ministry leaders decide how to shepherd congregations.

Finally, there are decisions that stop us in our tracks. How do you make a choice that is so difficult, complicated, or painful? And how are you supposed to know what to do in what feels like an impossible situation?

FIVE VERSES TO GUIDE YOU IN DECISION-MAKING

The Bible doesn’t include a specific verse for each unique decision you will face. Instead, it offers wisdom that can guide your decision-making in every circumstance: “Well, whatever you do, whether you eat or drink, do it all for God’s glory” (1 Corinthians 10:31 GNT). Whether you’re facing everyday decisions or life-changing choices, the Bible’s wisdom remains true.

Here are five verses to meditate on when you face a decision.

No matter the decision you’re facing, you can take comfort in the knowledge that God is infinitely wise and powerful.

Great and mighty is our Lord; his wisdom cannot be measured. Psalm 147:5 GNT

Like the Israelites, the most important decision you can make is whether you will serve God—this choice impacts every other decision you will make!

“Decide today whom you will serve, the gods your ancestors worshiped in Mesopotamia or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are now living. As for my family and me, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:15b GNT

When you choose to serve and love God, you learn how to make decisions that honor him.

Those who have reverence for the LORD will learn from him the path they should follow. Psalm 25:12 GNT

If you feel unable to make a difficult decision, God’s Word invites you to pray for wisdom.

But if any of you lack wisdom, you should pray to God, who will give it to you; because God gives generously and graciously to all. James 1:5 GNT

The Bible invites you to trust God in every circumstance and rely on him to guide you through every decision.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know. Remember the LORD in everything you do, and he will show you the right way. Proverbs 3:5-6 GNT

10 Bible Verses for Making Decisions (Tips on Making Godly Choices)

Today we’ll be talking about some of the best Bible verses and Christian quotes that you can use to guide you in your decision-making. We make tens of thousands of decisions in a day which begs the question: how can we ensure that we’re making the right decisions?

Table of Contents

  • Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)
  • James 1:5 (NIV)
  • 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
  • Proverbs 18:13 (NIV)
  • Matthew 16:26 (NIV)
  • Joshua 24:15 (NIV)
  • Proverbs 1:7 (NIV)
  • Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
  • Psalm 37:7 (NIV)
  • Proverbs 13:20 (NIV)

1.  “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” – Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

Far too often, we trust in our own hearts. We let our heart’s desires lead us down paths that result in sin and destruction. Yet what Solomon is telling us here in Proverbs is to rather trust in the LORD with all of our hearts and to not trust in our own understanding.

This would have been groundbreaking for the Israelites in the time of Solomon considering the fact that the very thing that Israel always struggled with was trusting in their own hearts and motives over God’s. They thought that they knew best and it always led them down the wrong paths to judgement.

Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” (NIV)

We cannot trust our own hearts and the decisions which come out of them. Rather, we must lean on the Lord’s understanding instead of our own in all things and He will make our paths straight. He will make our decision-making blessed when we trust in Him rather than in ourselves.

2.  “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” – James 1:5 (NIV)

If we are seeking wisdom in our decision-making, James makes it quite simple for us. He tells us to just ask God for wisdom and we will receive it. After all, did Solomon not simply ask God for wisdom and it was given to him in great measure?

Sometimes wisdom isn’t revealed to us because we don’t ask for it. Or, as James covers in chapter 4 of his book, we ask with the wrong intentions and the wrong purpose in mind. If you are looking for wisdom in order to make good decisions that honor the Lord in all that you do, ask Him for it and be honest with Him about it.

In Matthew 7:11, Jesus says, “If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” (NIV)

Sometimes we doubt that God knows what is good for us. We don’t ask Him to fulfill His will because we are scared of what may come out of it. Yet Jesus tells us, our Heavenly Father knows how to give good gifts to those who ask Him.

When you are seeking wisdom for your decision-making, simply talk to the Lord and ask Him to give it to you with the right intentions and listen to what He says.

If you want to learn more about praying and how to place your requests before God, you can read this article about prayer .

3. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” – 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)

Sometimes when we are looking for help in making decisions, we forget that God has already given us a perfect manual for how to live our lives. In 2 Timothy, Paul is writing to Timothy to encourage him as a leader and to build him up in Paul’s absence. Anyone who has ever been in the position of a leader can tell you that it isn’t easy!

Being a leader means making a lot of tough decisions on behalf of an entire group of people. If anyone needed help and guidance in making decisions, it was Timothy at this time.

Yet what does Paul point him to? He points Timothy back to the Scriptures, for they are the word of the Lord. What else could possibly bring more wisdom and guidance in making good and God-honoring decisions?

Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (NIV)

The Bible is not just a book that sits on our nightstands and collects dust. It is the living eternal Word of God that holds infinite amounts of biblical wisdom in its passages that is sitting there waiting for us to unpack.

Could we ever hope for a better source of wisdom for making decisions than the very words which are within Scripture?

When you are in the process of making decisions, never forget to consult the Word of God as your primary source of wisdom. If you make a decision that is in line with what Scripture says, you know that you are making a good decision.

Read this other article that I wrote, If you want to know more about knowing God through His Word .

4. “To answer before listening – that is folly and shame.” – Proverbs 18:13 (NIV)

Especially in the world that we live in today, it can be easy to want to make split-second decisions. We often make decisions off the top of our heads before we even take into account all of the information at our disposal. Solomon in his wisdom tells us here in Proverbs that this style of living is foolish and shameful.

True wisdom takes thought, effort, and intentionality to come to fruition. We must take the time when making decisions to witness what God is telling us before we go making a decision based on what our hearts say.

Likewise, in Proverbs 13:16, Solomon says, “All who are prudent act with knowledge, but fools expose their folly.” (NIV)

We must be people of knowledge and thought before we act. Going with what has been said previously, when making big decisions we have to take into account what Scripture says, what God is saying to us, and what logically makes sense.

The people of God should not act out of emotion but rather out of reason and out of God’s guidance. When you make decisions in your life, think before you act. Do not give an answer before you hear what God is saying to you.

5.  “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?” – Matthew 16:26 (NIV)

Sometimes I think a question that we miss when making decisions is: is this decision good for my soul? Is this decision good for my heart? It’s far too easy to get so caught up in the culture that we live in of gaining things that we forget about how it affects us and our souls.

In Proverbs 4:23, Solomon says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (NIV)

How are your decisions affecting your heart and soul? Are they causing damage to them that may be irreparable? Or are they pointing your heart and soul back to God and to Christ? Are they keeping your heart pure?

If you’ve made some decisions that have damaged your heart, check out this article: https://www.christianwalls.com/blogs/news/22-bible-verses-for-a-broken-heart

6.  “But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” – Joshua 24:15 (NIV)

Every single day, we face this choice that Joshua placed before the Israelites. The Israelites kept falling into idolatry and running away from God. Joshua saw this and told them that they had to choose one or the other.

Every day, we face the choice between idols that we have made and the real God that sits on the throne of heaven. We don’t make that choice with one big choice, we make it through each and every one of the decisions we make throughout the day. Even Jesus was tempted with this when He spent time in the wilderness after His baptism.

Matthew 4:8-11 says, “Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. ‘All this I will give you,’ he said, ‘if you will bow down and worship me.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Away from me, Satan! For it is written: “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.”’ Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.” (NIV).

When you’re making decisions, it’s a good rule of thumb to measure whether those decisions are to honor the Lord or to honor an idol that you have set up in your life. Think about this the next time you make a decision. Who are you being faithful to with that decision?

7.  “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” – Proverbs 1:7 (NIV)

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. This isn’t a cowering in the corner kind of fear, but rather a fear of reverence. It is a fear that understands who you are in comparison to who God is. It is a fear that leads us to awe in light of God’s glory. Solomon tells us that this kind of fear is the beginning of strong wisdom in decision-making.

In Isaiah 55:9, God says, “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (NIV)

We must always remember where God fits in when we are making decisions. If we want to make good decisions, understanding who we are in relation to who God is happens to be a big key in the process. God’s ways and thoughts are much higher than ours so how could we not consult Him and ask Him for help when we are making decisions?

8.  “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

It’s important to note here that Paul most likely penned these verses on the floor of a prison cell. Paul went through a lot in his day; likely more than any of us will ever go through. Needless to say, he of all people knew how to find peace and comfort with God.

Many times when we make decisions, we fight with finding that peace that we made the right decision. Yet here, Paul has given us the key. The secret (which isn’t so secret) is to submit your decisions and requests before God and He will grant you peace.

In Matthew 11:28, Jesus invites us by saying, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (NIV)

Jesus can bring us rest and peace when we are making tough decisions. We just have to go about it the right way and submit our thoughts and requests before the Lord. He will bring us peace that surpasses all understanding.

9.  “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.” – Psalm 37:7 (NIV)

It is no secret that we live in a world of instant gratification. We tend to want what we want and we want it now. The same goes for making decisions. We want answers from God about what we should do and we want them now!

Yet the Bible calls us to a different kind of thinking. This verse in Psalms calls us to wait on the Lord and to rest in Him as we wait. It also calls us to ignore what other people are doing and to focus on what God is doing.

Psalm 46:10 tells us, “He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.’” (NIV)

Sometimes we just get so wrapped up in trying to make a decision that we forget to listen to God, the One who will be exalted regardless of what happens. If you are in the process of making a decision, just take some time to be still and listen to God. What do you feel Him telling you?

10.  “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” – Proverbs 13:20 (NIV)

The last verse we’re going to look at about making decisions has to do with who you spend time with and who you take advice from. It’s important to ask for advice from people, but it’s even more important that those people are wise and godly.

Sometimes we ask people for advice not because we trust them to give good advice, but because we know that they’ll agree with our thinking. Instead, be careful to walk with wise and godly people who can truly discern the will of God and help you make a good decision.

Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” (NIV)

Who are you letting sharpen you and what are you letting them sharpen you with? Choose wisely who you let advise you and affect your making of decisions.

Overall, making a good and wise decision is a difficult thing to do. It takes time, thought, effort, and intentionality to truly discern what it is that God is calling you to do. Yet in the end, it is worth it beyond words. Find wisdom and rest in the person of God and He will make your paths straight.

10 Scriptures About Making Decisions

Some decisions seem to direct the course of our lives more than others. As believers, we desire to choose the right path—God’s path—with every decision we make.

But sometimes the right decision does not seem so obvious, leaving us two choices: fear of making a wrong decision or faith in God to guide us in to make the right one.

You never have to be afraid of making the wrong decision. Fear will always lead to the wrong choice, but faith and obedience to God will always end up right because He is a God of mercy and restoration, and His plan is for you to have a good and expected end.

If you’re facing some choices today, and you aren’t sure which road is the right one to take, here are 10 scriptures for when you need to make a decision that will give you confidence that God will speak to you. If you’re tuned in to Him, you will make the right decision. (All scriptures are taken from the NIV .)

1. “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” (Jeremiah 29:11) 2. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” (Psalm 32:8)

3. “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” (Psalm 119:105)

4. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

5. “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.” (Proverbs 11:14)

Find out how to know the answer to any situation HERE .

6. “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” (Proverbs 15:22)

7. “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.” (Proverbs 16:9)

8. “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” (Matthew 7:7-8)

9. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28) 10. “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (James 1:5)

God wants to give you guidance! He desires that you walk with Him to get the light you need for each step you take in life. He is not the author of confusion. Step forward in confidence with Him!

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

A rebuke goes deeper into one who has understanding than a hundred blows into a fool.
